Black Friday sales in Canada. What of that do you think?

Asked by Seelix (14952points) November 23rd, 2013

So I work at a jewelry store in a mall. This coming (Black) Friday, the mall is opening at 7am, and some stores are having ca-razy sales. Funny thing, though? I live in northern Ontario.

I was wondering what the Jelly consensus was on this topic. I’m assuming that the idea is to keep Canadian shoppers from hopping the border and doing their holiday shopping in Soo Michigan or wherever, but really? Black Friday in Canada, following a holiday that we don’t even celebrate…?

Aww, you people are like the 51st state anyway. Next (if the marketing types have their way), you’ll be having Fourth of July, Columbus Day and Presidents Day sales….
.

So, anyway….. what time do ya think I should be there for a good spot in line ??

I imagine that the trend was started by companies who do a lot of business in the US. Besides, “Black Friday”, “Small Business Saturday” and “Cyber Monday” are about Christmas and Hanukkah gift shopping. The trend to have sales the day after US Thanksgiving was just because many people (other than retail workers) have that day off.

I think Canadians should boycott it so the disease doesn’t spread to outside countries.

I guess Canada can decide this Friday is the kick off to the holiday season even without Thanksgiving. It’s odd to do it on Friday though, because you are working this coming Friday. In America the majority of people have the day off and have time to shop.

Thanksgiving and Black Friday are late this year. It actually hurts the holiday shopping season when it is this late. Plus, the small percentage of Jewish people out there shopping for Chanukah have to do it now, because that holiday is so early this year.

Eh fuck it. We already have Boxing Day. Anyways, deals or not, I’m fucking broke.

For the longest time I thought that on Boxing Day you all just went outside and beat the shit out of each other…

@OneBadApple Nah, we do that when one of our hockey team loses. Which is all the time.
