People who are celebrating Christmas: Are you ready?

Asked by jca (36062points) December 22nd, 2013

I asked a similar question back in 2011, which does not surprise me because every year I am not ready for Christmas. Part of it is that I work full time, and am a single mother, but even before I had a child, I was never ready for Christmas. I really think it’s due to working and being out of the house 10–12 hours a day and having limited days off.

In magazines we see “the perfect Christmas” with families writing cards by the fireplace, beautifully wrapped presents under the tree, the house decorated with incredible decorations, holiday food artfully arranged on a buffet table, the list goes on and on and it’s never what mine looks like. My presents are wrapped on my bed, on the day I am going to see the recipient. Very rarely do I bake anything. My cards are done at work, usually at the last minute so I am lucky if they arrive by Christmas.

Are you ready for Christmas?

Nearly there. Just some wrapping to do.

The holidays are slipping past me this year as if they’re not happening at all. I haven’t been listening to Xmas songs, didn’t mail cards and have no plans for Xmas Eve/Day or New Year’s. However, I’m not completely immune to the season. I’ve been watching every version I can rent or stream of my favorite Xmas movie, “A Christmas Carol,” saving my favorite, the 1951 British one, till Xmas Eve.

I discovered a Xmas song this year I’ve never heard before, a rather sad one called “Fairytale of New York.” If you’re interested, it’s here on Youtube.

Yes, keeping it really simple here. Just getting together with my daughter for Xmas eve, dinner, gifts and that’s fine with me. I have kept it really low key the last number of years, been there, done that, the major scene. No thanks, it’s really just another day and I am not sentimental about the holidays.

Not. At. All. I’m going out shopping tomorrow, so wish me luck!

Didn’t do cards this year.
Part of my heart (daughter, husband and 2 grand kids) moved to Scotland this year. I bought their gifts from Amazon.com so my daughter has to wrap them.
Another part of my heart (other daughter, husband and 4 kids) moved about 5 hours away. We will see them Christmas Day at their house. I have they’re gifts wrapped and I’m bringing cookies. I spent the last three days baking egg free cookies because one grandson is allergic.
We will be in the Bay Area to see my MIL Christmas Eve and her gifts are wrapped.
My son isn’t talking to me this year and told me not to send his children gifts because he would throw them away. I bought his children cards and put cash in them and put them in my safe. Some day they will know how much we love them and are thinking of them.
The only thing we have left to do is pack the car. Dog/house sitters are arranged so hopefully everything is in place.
Breathe everyone and have a Merry Christmas!

Not at all. I just got my tree up and decorated, and the lights out on the fence, but I still have three strings of interior lights for my family room and I’ve been too lazy to get them up.

I was out shopping for replacement bulbs for the outdoor lights, but it was too late, every store I went to was out. I stayed out too long – you’ve heard of shop till you drop – well, I missed a curb at the last store and fell right into the street in front. I’m so stiff and sore today, I can hardly move.

Ouch, @YARNLADY. Hope you’re feeling better soon!

I’m just about ready. I finished my Christmas shopping yesterday, most people have only got a token gift this year as money is tight but I’m pretty sure I haven’t forgotten anyone! I don’t finish work until 1pm on Christmas Eve so I had to be a bit more organised that I usually am this year.

Just re-read my previous comment and would like to clarify that despite my lack of participation in this year’s holiday celebration, I am NOT feeling or behaving Scrooge-like in any way; I’m just laying low.

Nonetheless… I can easily muster enough Xmas spirit to wish each and every one of my fellow jellies happy holidays and best wishes for health and prosperity in the coming year.

Not really.

I have a bunch of sewing to do, since I’m making gladiator-like capes for my son and a couple of his friends, and I’m in a serious “can’t be arsed” place right now. It’s really not even a LOT of sewing. If I weren’t so pissy about it I could have it all done in a few hours. But I’d rather sit here with my coffee and BS around. Haha.

Online ordering has replaced most of my frantic shopping sessions, and as I’ll be at my mom’s house, I’m not putting up a tree this year. All I’m required to bring for Christmas dinner is bread, amazingly…and gift wrapping won’t take long this year. I do have a gingerbread house to decorate, but even that is already set up. So, yeah, I’m ready – but I’m also cheating, of course.

@Judi “Some day they will know how much we love them and are thinking of them.”

I’m glad you’re doing that. Your grandkids are lucky to have you.

I haven’t even sent out most of the envelopes with the Christmas gifts inside. Hubby was gone most of the month and I was sick.

P. S. two days of rest and hot showers have relieved my sore muscles, but my legs are badly bruised from my fall.

Haven’t written cards in 10+ years. Wish others would stop writing them to me. I hold on to them until the 26th and then throw them out. What I really hate are the family picture xmas cards because then you feel like you have to keep them. But what are you really going to do with them? Since they have writing, you’re not going to frame them and I can’t be bothered to make albums.

Tonight I’m picking up my pies at Baker’s Square (yep, I cheat) and I have 2 items left to wrap. Since Xmas is at my sister’s this year, I’ve already baked my contribution (ham puffs). Now, I’m ready to sit back, relax, drink and be merry.

@Juels I quit cards years ago too, and I am really uncaring, I open them at the mailbox, look at them and toss them in the recycle bin on the way back in. lol
I am irritated today because someone whom I explicitlly asked to not buy me a gift did, and now they are insisting I come by to get it. Bah Humbug! haha

Juels's avatar

@Coloma Would it be too bitchy to remind them that gift giving includes them making the delivery trip?

Seek's avatar

I put all cards on the tree like ornaments. I “forget” to pack them after New Year’s Day.

^ That’s a really good idea, thanks!
