[NSFW] Do you believe there are human pheromones?

Asked by ETpro (34605points) January 10th, 2014

What makes you think there are, or are not any pheromones influencing human behavior. How do the smells of other people influence your reaction to them? Is your sense of smell sensitive enough that you notice subtle day-to-day changes in those who are close to you? If so, how does your response vary as their scent changes? When, and where on the body, do you prefer natural human scents and when do chemical factories provide a better smell? If your answer is SFW, respond here.

I’m sure there are but not for me. I have a terrible sense of smell, though they may work subliminally.

I was in a bad relationship for several years, and I blame pheromones to some extent. He smelled so damn good. There was a rush of oxytocin when I smelled him, similar to what I felt with the ‘letdown reflex’ while nursing my son. Prior to this experience, I thought pheromones were hogwash.

@Bill1939 Gosh, I’m not sure what the word sure means.

@thorninmud Eye due two. Eye due two… Butt dew ewe?

@pleiades It’s that kind if a day. Blame it on pheromone madness.

@flutherother I suspect if they are there, they bind to brain receptors or promote brain chemical binding to same. Sensing the smell may have little or nothing to do with their operation in animals or humans. That said, the sent of a wet pussy or a sexy ass is like a bolt of lightning to my sex drive.

@hearkat I can fully appreciate how that could happen. The apocrine glands in most mammals secrete an orderless, oily substance that takes on a characteristic smell due to bacterial action on it after secretion. And that substance contains the pheromones for the given mammal. Unlike many furry mammals, humans have eccrine sweat glands all over our bodies to help regulate our temperature by secreting watery sweat. But we only have apocrine glands around our ears, lips, underarms, the nipples of our breasts, and our pubic area. That seems to suggest they play a role in sex and mother/child bonding.

Probably, but I think it happens on a level below our conscious understanding.

@ETpro replied, ”@Bill1939 Gosh, I’m not sure what the word sure means.” By ‘sure’ I mean that we stink, or would but for the war against natural smells. Daily or more frequent bathing, deodorants, perfumes and other synthetic scents have greatly reduced the power of the smells that our bodies produce to elicit impulsive behaviors by ourselves and others.
