Whats your favorite cover song?

Asked by livelaughlove21 (15724points) January 17th, 2014

This has been asked before, but not in awhile.

I was surfing Facebook and someone posted this cover of the Friends theme song “I’ll be There For You” by the Rembrandts. I thought it was pretty cool, and it got me thinking about really impressive covers of songs and how it’s sometimes the cover that makes it big when the original did not. In general, I hate covers and I think the new artist usually ruins the song, but there are some really good ones out there, too.

-

Here are my favorite covers:

Whitney Houston’s cover of “I Will Always Love You” by Dolly Parton

Sinead O’Connor’s cover of “Nothing Compares 2 U” by Prince

The Fugees’ cover of “Killing Me Softly,” first recorded by Roberta Flack

Jeff Buckley’s cover of “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen

Joan Jett & the Blackhearts’’ cover of “I Love Rock ‘N Roll” by The Arrows

-

So, what are your favorite covers? They don’t have to be more popular than the original or even well known at all. It could be someone covering a song on YouTube, even. Links would be awesome.

Hurt by Johnny Cash. Such a powerful ballad.

That cover of the Friends theme was so depressing. I remember that song as the really upbeat F.R.I.E.N.D.S song that always made me happy. I didn’t like the mood change.

livelaughlove21's avatar

@dxs I like it. I like the original better – I mean, it’s from one of my favorite TV shows of all time – but I thought the mood change was interesting.

I knew “Hurt” would show up in this thread. While I’m a country fan, I’m not much of a Johnny Cash fan (blasphemy!), so I don’t appreciate nearly as much as most people do. I’ve never heard the original, though.

Strangely, I love Wynonna Judd’s version of Burning Love.

You’ll laugh, if you even know who Perry Como is, but I’ve always loved his cover of “And I Love You So” a little bit better than Don McLean’s original.

Wow. Tough question. If I had to pick one, maybe Walk the Moon’s cover of Burning Down the House.

Least favorite? Wow that’s even tougher. I’ll have to give it some thought…

I’m inclined to say:
Steven Wilson – ‘the Guitar Lesson’ (original by Momus)
Ghost – ‘I’m a Marionette’ (original by ABBA)
1,000 Homo DJs – ‘Supernaut’ (original by Black Sabbath’)

Least favorite:
Johnny Cash – ‘Hurt’ (original by NIN). There’s not a doubt in my mind about that one. I hate that version with every fiber of my being.

Even though I don’t usually like violin covers, it’s this one.

Opeth’s cover of Deep Purple’s Soldier of Fortune

Also Opeth’s cover of Iron Maiden’s Remember Tomorrow

Also also Opeth’s Cover of Alice in Chains’ Would?

I reallyreallyreally love Opeth.

Least Favourite:

Guns and Roses’ shitty cover version of the Beatles’ Live and Let Die.
The line is ”…and in this ever-changing world in which we’re living,” you illiterate bastard.

@Seek_Kolinahr I loved the remember tomorrow cover. I was a huge maiden head back in the day.

Seek's avatar

^ I saw them live for the first time a year or two ago. It was pretty much a religious experience. Only sad I never got to see Paul Di’Anno or Clive.

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

I’ll be exploring them a bit further. Thanks for sharing!

Seek's avatar

Oh, if you’re talking about Opeth, I’ve seen them live seven times. And that is always a fabulous experience as well. ^_^

I am and going through a bunch of youtube clips now. Kinda digging it.

Opeth is kind of unique, because the frontman, Mikael Akerfeldt, is brilliant and gives absolutely no fucks about whether his fanbase approves of his newest material.

So in the beginning, the albums Orchid and Morningrise, the band was pretty much black metal. Then getting into Still Life and Deliverance, they’re totally death metal. Then they come out with Damnation – an acoustic album. Then Blackwater Park and Ghost Reveries are completely off the wall awesome stuff, and then he starts in on Watershed with some 70s prog influences, and the most recent album is getting further into prog and psych rock.

I have no idea what to expect of the next album. And I love it.

Manson’s cover of Soft Cell’s Tainted Love ain’t bad at all…considering.

A Case of You

I think Diana Krall’s cover is better the orignal

Darth_Algar's avatar

Honestly, Opeth bore me to tears at this point. Glad I caught them back in 2006 though (one of the “Chronology” shows).

Seek's avatar

That was the first time I saw them – at Gigantour. Sadly, Martin Mendez was already gone by that point, but at least I have him on the Deliverance/Damnation DVD.

William Shatner’s Cover of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’
It gets better and better as it goes on. Skip to 2:45 if you want the meat of it.
AND
A Perfect Circle’s cover of ‘Imagine’ by John Lennon
AND
Dar Williams cover of ‘Comfortably Numb’ by Pink Floyd
(if you watch the video it seems to have fuck all to do with the song)
AND
Steven Wilson’s cover of ‘The Day Before You Came’ by ABBA

As for the most hated cover…
Johnny Cash’s version of Hurt’ by Nine Inch Nails

AstroChuck's avatar

Wall Of Voodoo’s cover of Ring of Fire is my favorite. The late, great Marc Moreland’s guitar makes it.

filmfann's avatar

My favorite? Probably Marvin Gaye’s version of Heard it through the Grapevine (originally done by Gladys Knight and the Pips)

Least favorite? William “The Shat” Shatner destroying Rocket Man

Close second: Pat Boone singing Tutti Fruiti

Jimi Hendrix – “All Along the Watchtower” (originally by Bob Dylan)

Tia Carrere – “Ballroom Blitz” (originally by Sweet)

Soft Cell – “Tainted Love” (originally by Gloria Jones)

They Might Be Giants – “Istanbul (Not Constantinople)” (originally by the Four Lads)

The White Stripes – “Jolene” (originally by Dolly Parton; the Miley Cyrus version is quite good as well)

The Civil Wars – “Billie Jean” (originally by Michael Jackson)

Street Sweeper Social Club – “Paper Planes” (originally by M.I.A.)

Karen O with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross – “Immigrant Song” (originally by Led Zeppelin)

I was blessedly unaware William Shatner’s tendency to bastardize popular music.
A curse on all who enlightened me.

Manson’s I Put a Spell on You.
Mick Harvey’s Sad Dark Eyes. Original is by the Loved Ones, who were the Beatles of Australia. Though in finding that video I just discovered Nick Cave also has a version, so my favorite may change shortly…
Nirvana’s Lake of Fire. Original is by the Meat Puppets, as are “Oh Me” and “Plateau,” but the Puppets do a better job of those latter two.
Van Morrison’s Baby Please Don’t Go. A slave song, originally recorded by Big Joe Williams. I like Van’s version way better than the Stones’.
Jose Gonzalez’s Teardrop. Original is by Massive Attack.

wildpotato's avatar

Grand Funk’s Gimmie Shelterso much better than the Stones’ original.
Death in Vegas’ Twist and Crawl. Original is by the English Beat.
The Bloodhound Gang’s Along Comes Mary. Original is by The Association.

sorry for double posting; it’s hard to do a bunch of links on an older iPhone coz it erases my writing whenever I switch between tabs

@SavoirFaire

This is my favourite cover of “Jolene”.

I love this band so much.

filmfann's avatar

@SavoirFaire Jack White did a cover of Little Willie John’s “I’m Shakin’” that I adore.

SavoirFaire's avatar

@Seek_Kolinahr Nice! I hadn’t heard that one before.

@filmfann Very cool. Thanks!

syz's avatar

@SavoirFaire Oh my God, my word view just shifted – a Miley Cyrus song I like?

SavoirFaire's avatar

@syz Miley Cyrus is a talented singer. So are most teen idols. It’s just that they typically do not perform music that you or I would like.

ibstubro's avatar

@SavoirFaire
Flippin amazing post. Feel free to send me random musical posts. I know a lot of obscure music, but not yours.
Kudos.
