Do you ever get tv theme songs or commercials or sayings stuck in your Mellon? Which ones and how do you get rid of them?

“Something wicked this way comes.”
it was a Ray Bradbury story, then it was a movie. I saw it when I was a kid, and now catch myself mumbling it ominously whenever things take a turn for the less-than-pleasant. Still gives me chills, so I have apparently not mastered noodle extraction.

“Fo sho ho” (a joke/saying my friend Sasha and I say to each other) and usually any song I just heard has the potential of getting stuck in my head.

Lately, those songs from the free credit report .com commercials have been getting stuck in my head. “free credit report .com, I should have seen this coming at me like an atom bomb…”

You may be interested to hear an awesome, hour long radio show on this very subject (why music gets stuck in your head). I just heard the first 10 minutes on the train, and it was pretty compelling.
Radio Lab: Pop Music

If you’ve never heard Radio Lab before, and you’re a fan of This American Life, you should really check it out.

Happens all the time. Situations trigger an association in my head and I’ll hear a line someone’s said, a line from a text I’ve read, a song…..could be anything.
And I often wake up with some song in my head – or just get it stuck during the day because I listened to it, thought about or talked about it.

I once heard someone say you can remove any song stuck in your head – without replacing it – by playing the riff from Smoke on the Water in your head. It often works!

Every morning it’s something different. And I can’t get it out until noon.

Lately, it’s been this.

That darn lollipop song.

syz's avatar

I have a rotating play list in my head. I wake up with one almost every morning. I don’t understand why it’s often a song that I don’t like and sometimes don’t even know more than a line of lyrics. It’s often maddening.

@ben – Now I have a new fear for my hypochondriacism. Thanks.

“Cottonmouth (Jargon)” by Seabird has been in my head for maybe the last three months or so…

When I notice something is stuck in my head my brain starts playing ‘Zombie’ by the Cranberries as a kind of default – “It’s in your head, its in your head…”

I went to a Nickle Creek concert and they said that when they need to get something out of their heads, they just say “Byyyyyy Menonnnnnn!” It works for me, just not all the time.

“HeadOn, apply directly to the forehead!”

The advertisement is so simple, yet so effective. I haven’t had a TV in over a year, but I still can’t get the commercial out of my head.

Every couple of days it’s the bassline to “Brickhouse.” Totally at random and I utterly hate that song.

For the past two days “Here Comes the Sun” has been stuck in my head.

A repeat offender though is the Peanut Butter Jelly Time song. Especially on Fridays for some reason.

When I run and am sans ipod, it is to the pounding beat of My Sharona. It sucks.
