Where can I find long feathers?

Asked by blueberry_kid (5957points) February 3rd, 2014

For my sculpture class, I’ve decided to made a Venetian / Carnaval looking headdress. It calls for long peacock or regular feathers. My teacher says she doesn’t have any and is requiring me to get them myself.

I know I could easily just change my concept, or just a whole new headdress but I love Carnaval so much, my sketch is beautiful and I can’t really think of anything else.

I looked at the Michael’s craft store site and they’ve got nothing of the sort, so is there any place that sells feathers for something like this? I can post a link of my sketch as well if that’ll help. I just really want these long feathers.

My first suggestion would also be a craft, fabric, costume or art store. I remember making marionette birds as a kid in the ‘70s and the hobby shop had feathers.

I just did a web search for: feathers for costumes. It generated several hits, so if you add your area code it might bring up places in your region.

Here. Here. More Just search “feather supply”.

(The feathers in your photo are likely ostrich feathers.)

I buy peacock feathers for my cats to play with, but I usually buy them at cat shows. Plus, the ones in the photographs appear to be ostrich feathers. You can buy them here, plus lots of other places: http://www.papermart.com/Ostrich-Drab-Plumes/id=53018?GOCMP=Embellishments&GOMTC=Exact&GOKEY=ostrich+feathers&gclid=CM2qh5GisbwCFYNQ7AodOXYArw

It depends a lot on where you live.

Any place, you might be able to contact your local Ag agent and ask them who raises large (peacock, ostrich) birds in your area. Your local Humane Society might also have a list or people who can/do deal with large birds.

In city, you might check with the zoo.or animal preserves.

Rural, I’d ask at the farm stores, who’s buying that type of food, or if they know of large birds being raised.

In short, is you were ‘the kid next door’ and you asked me that question, I’ll bet I would find you feathers for free.

In a grassy area where Canada geese hang out.

In my city, the zoo does have peacock feathers they pick up when the residents drop them, and sell in the gift shop. Or, ebay. Or, buy a peacock and do lots of apologizing. Well, it seemed right to make it three, I needed one more thing.
