Did I just ruin my cast-iron skillet?

Asked by Strauss (23623points) February 7th, 2014

I was using one of those “plastic” spatulas that are designed for non-stick pans. (Don’t ask why!) The skillet was empty, and I left the room for a few minutes. I got distracted and forgot the heat was still on under the skillet, so the spatula melted onto the skillet. Will heating it again remove all the plastic from the pan?

If it was sealed properly before you used it, you should let it cool and it should flake off fairly easily.

Recondition and re-season it, no worries.

I would throw the pan in the freezer and then use scraper/chisel to chip off as much plastic as you can. Then take the pan outside and using the side burner of your grill if you have one or the grill itself if you don’t and just let the pan bake on high heat until the plastic is completely charred. I say the grill as you really do not want to do this indoors as burning plastic emits toxic fumes. Let it cool and use a wire brush to remove all residue. You will now have to re-season your pan and it will be good as new.

I would also let it cool to room temperature and remove what you can; if some is still stuck, you could freeze it – here in NJ, you could just put it outside overnight. Once you feel you’ve removed all the residue, recondition and reseason it.

I used to use only old cast iron cookware and I would clean it once a year by putting them in a self-cleaning oven full cycle. It burned everything off and left nothing but ash. I would then fully season the pans for another year of nonstick cooking.

That’s what I’d do. It’s impossible to ruin cast iron cookware.

@MadMadMax Agreed and the biggest mistake I see owners of cast iron is wash them with soap and water.

There are videos and Facebook pages dedicated to the are of cast iron cooking… my personal chef fiancé follows a few of them.

You can get the real deal on ebay cheap. I have not had much luck with newer cast iron. You can get a real Griswold or Wagner for the same or cheaper than new.

It’s my favorite utensil. I’ve had it for about 20 years, and I wish I had a complete set. I did the “self-clean oven” trick suggested by @MadMadMax. Perfect. It also cleaned most of the cooked-on crud from the outside of the skillet! Thanks.

P.S. No question, I ruined the spatula!
