Does anyone else think "House of Cards" is an update on Richard III?

Asked by stanleybmanly (24153points) February 22nd, 2014

I’m at the 3d episode in the 2nd season (thank you nickelodeon) and am enjoying the over the top portrayal of the perfect villain. Evil, treachery, deceit, but never cowardice.

Shades of Richard III for sure. (Kevin Spacey has played Richard on the stage, more than once). I think maybe greater shades of Macbeth, though. And Claire is so very Lady McBeth. Hard to find any drama that isn’t shades of Shakespeare, though. Dude pretty much had it covered. Even Sons of Anarchy is loosely based on Hamlet. Vroom, vroom.

It’s a pretty classic tale isn’t it? A bit too much success goes to the head. Feeling invincible too many risks are taken. All fall down….

Absolutely. For Francis Underwood, it’s always the “Winter of Discontent.” Great series. Spacey and Wright are soooo good.

Thanks! Especially if you mean my answer. ;-)

@GoldieAV16 Claire does make a convincing Lady Macbeth except that Francis is clearly self motivating and would be every bit as ruthless were she to disappear. For the first few episodes I thought Claire was driving Francis, but Frank has absolutely no doubt or hesitation when arriving at the crossroads of evil and opportunity.
