Social Question

Cruiser's avatar

Would you give the same answer(s)?

Asked by Cruiser (40449points) March 7th, 2014

If you had to use your real picture and name instead of an anonymous avatar and made up moniker? I read this article Good Question: Why Are There So Many Mean, Anonymous Commenters Online? that explores this very question. It chonicles as one example how author Ann Rice says “says the “anti-author gangsters” make her a victim of bullying.”

A study was done where it “found 53 percent of comments were uncivil in papers that allowed anonymity. That percentage dropped to 29 percent when newspapers required names or links to Facebook accounts.”

As an active member of 4 different social Q&A sites I know I see and experience this trend first hand. I also know some people will have 2 or more accounts so they can ask and answer questions they in real life may not be comfortable asking or answering. For those Jellies that are completely anonymous, would your answers be any different if you were logged on with your real self?? And for those who are more open about their identities here, would you be tempted to say things differently if your were totally anonymous?

Yes, I believe that I would be the same person.

flutherother's avatar

Where I gave an answer it would be the same but being anonymous allows you to be more personal and revealing about yourself.

ucme's avatar

I’ve had my photo as an avatar here in the past & answer exactly the same way regardless.

filmfann's avatar

When I started with Fluther, I used an avatar that had my picture. One one question, I began to feel very vulnerable, and changed the picture to one very similar to the one you see now.
If I had to use my name and photo, I might not have been so open and honest about some of the problems in my personal life, but I don’t think I would have been more good natured.

Skaggfacemutt's avatar

I don’t think it would make any difference. Just to test it out, I have changed my avatar to my real picture.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

I would give the same answer, I do think most would be a tad more polite with and sorry for the lack of a better word ,stupid questions and answers but that is about it.

KNOWITALL's avatar

Absolutely, the same, as you can see by my profile pic.

@Dutchess_III You seem the exact same to me, you’re right. :)

Dutchess_III's avatar

@Skaggfacemutt I always thought you were a guy!

You seem exactly the same to me too @KNOWITALL.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@ucme I want to seeeeeeeee!

Skaggfacemutt's avatar

Maybe we should put out a challenge, all jellies to put their real picture up. Then we will know if they are guys or girls. Ha-ha.

(If you put up Tom Cruise, we are going to know you’re cheating)

LuckyGuy's avatar

My answers would be exactly the same if I had to use my real name. However, I would never mention my prostate nor my PIA sister-in-law.
I am always civil.

Wait! @Skaggfacemutt You’re a XX chromosome holder? I had no idea. (I probably should look at profiles more often.)

KNOWITALL's avatar

@LuckyGuy Why? You don’t want to pass on the street and someone go, hey aren’t you the lucky prostrate guy? lol

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

Probably close to the same. Some personal things I have said about people I know would not have been said. It’s healthy to have a place to vent sometimes.

ibstubro's avatar

My picture wouldn’t change my participation in any way.

However, the OP is “your real picture and name”. If that were required, I would not be here. I have no FB account for that very reason. I was once hunted down by use of a seemingly innocuous comment I’d made on another Q&A site. Turned out to be in a good way, and brought new members to Fluther, but I have to admit I was taken aback by a phone call from a stranger 1,000 miles away.

LuckyGuy's avatar

@KNOWITALL You got it. Everyone would be asking how I’m doing. Or tell me the were praying for me, or not praying for me, or they heard that you can get it from eating poorly, or you get it from too much exercise. Blah, blah, blah… Better they have no idea.

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

@Skaggfacemutt How do we “know” they are real pictures?

Skaggfacemutt's avatar

That is true. Just remember “tallhotblond.” I guess, if you look too good to be true, I would be suspicious.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Skaggfacemutt I could care less about looks, but I do tend to connect better with a ‘face’.

Dutchess_III's avatar

(Does it have to be a recent picture??)

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Dutchess_III No, put up your life’s best or we could post nerdy ones, whatever….lol

Dutchess_III's avatar

Alrighty then!

ibstubro's avatar

Me finding a pic of me is a tall order.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I can’t! It won’t let me!

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Dutchess_III Take on from your fb, save to your desktop, upload to fluther.

Dutchess_III's avatar

OK…why did that work and what happened to your face @KNOWITALL?

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Dutchess_III What happened to YOUR face…hahaha, just posting my dorky one!

You’re a pretty lady, I pictured you a bigger gal, more corn-fed like me….hahaha!

Wonder what @cruiser looks like…oh wait…

ibstubro's avatar

This is just strictly temporary, eh?

Mine is. I want to look at the REAL Calvin, not some wannabe.

Kropotkin's avatar

Using a real picture wouldn’t make much difference.

I do think I would be more likely to censor myself if I were to use my real name. It’s not even a matter of civility—although that could be a side-effect. I think using my real name would just make me more wary of what opinions I’d be willing to express.

hearkat's avatar

My answers are already civil, open, and honest. I strive to conduct myself with integrity and courtesy in all areas of my life. I do not always succeed, but I am a human, after all.

Dutchess_III's avatar

You too @Cruiser! You good lookin’ thing you!

By the way…that is NOT a current pic. Just my lifetime best.

@ibstubro You look kind of like I imagined. :)

ibstubro's avatar

Maybe 6 years old, @Dutchess_III. Vegas trip. Best I could do. I had one that was a few years younger, but I actually look older because I was thinner and very, very tanned from a driving tour of the West.

Your’s was not really what I expected, but I was thinking current event. Natural blonde? You look very fun and vivacious in the photo, in any case, which basically meshes with your current Fluther persona. :)

tedibear's avatar

I wouldn’t have shared any of the personal stuff that I have. However, my answers would have been the same, sans personal things.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Um…my natural color was boring brown, but I used to get it streaked. I don’t know if it was streaked in that pic tho. That was during my poverty stage. I would have never spent a dime on my hair. It could just be the “gray” (It’s really a pretty silver color) starting, and it looked like streaking.

That was taken at my grandson’s baptism by the way, LOL!!

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

This is my standing with my namesake. I’m on the right. My answers would be the same.

Dutchess_III's avatar

@Cruiser Ha ha! I just saw the link to the youtube video. My sister used to have a Cockatiel. He was sitting just outside the bathroom door at my Mom’s house, where my sister lived and I was visiting. I was alone in the house preparing to take a shower. I hadn’t shut the door. Just as my last stitch of clothing hit the floor that damn bird wolf whistled at me! I slammed the door in his face.

cookieman's avatar

I’d give the exact same answers. I try to be the same me in all circumstances.

<<—This is me.

Cruiser's avatar

<<knuckles and hugs to all that came out with pics of thems-selves!>> GA to all! I think we should all post a selfie with our tongues sticking out ala @KNOWITALLTHAT was pretty gutsy!

Seaofclouds's avatar

I’d answer the same, but may leave out some personal information in regards to my family. I’m usually calm and collected in person, but there are times when my anger comes out. I’ve been the same way here. I don’t see any point in being different just because I’m online and under a different name.

Jonesn4burgers's avatar

I ain’t afraid uh no posts! I answer the same when I use my own face, or the gorilla’s.
@cookieman you look like such a sweetie! I like that picture. You look so happy.

ucme's avatar

The Fluther avatar curse strikes again, this place just hates the iPad.
Don’t know what you guys can see, but that’s me over on my profile, upside down, but still ;-}

Dutchess_III's avatar

It’s not upside down when you click on it and go into your profile. :)

Hi @cookieman! Hi @ucme!

ibstubro's avatar

Yes, @Dutchess_III, if I click on ucme’s profile while standing on my head, the pic is perfectly fine.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Just turn your monitor upside down, duh!

Dutchess_III's avatar

Better yet….hlod down the control and alt key and hit your down arrow. That should do it.

ibstubro's avatar

I ‘hled’ a mirror the bottom of my monitor while the pic was up. Was like a Rorschach test.

You do not want to know what I saw!

ucme's avatar

Oops upside ya head I said oops upside ya head!

Jonesn4burgers's avatar

I tried taking my glasses off, and turn them upside down. I couldn’t see you at all that way. I hope you can turn it, because right now you look like the little hangy thing in the back of someone’s throat. :P

ucme's avatar

Alas it’s out of my control, a Fluther avatar glitch that has bugger all to do with me.
I don’t mind though, it’s quite quirky.

ibstubro's avatar

Yes, you’re a trend setter, @ucme. @Dutchess_III has already followed your lead.

ucme's avatar

Haha, so I now see, wonder if that was by accident or design.

ibstubro's avatar

She’s kind of a Designing Woman.

ucme's avatar

Ahh, so long as she has no designs on me, i’m spoken for.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Help! I’m falling!

ibstubro's avatar

Oh, get a grip, @Dutchess_III!

Dutchess_III's avatar

Too late. :(
