Is it possible to faint from extreme anxiety?

Asked by thebeadholder (872points) July 2nd, 2008

I have only passed out once before from heat exhaustion. Last night I was awakened with a very serious situation and was extremely panicked and passed out. Any thoughts? Has this ever happened to you? What causes this?

This is quite common. You probably hyperventilated, and then passed out. Once your body reset your respiratory rate (breathing), you woke up.

Edit: If this happens to you again, try to concentrate on abdominal (or diaphragmatic) breathing. This tends to slow the breathing rate and correct the issues that result in passing out.
