What is your most prized possession?

Asked by GloPro (8404points) April 29th, 2014 from iPhone

OK, I’m putting a couple of rules in place for your answer.

IF you are going to say something about not having a prized possession, just don’t answer.

You must name a TANGIBLE possession… Some item that can be bought, sold, gifted or traded.

Please, no LIVING things.

Finally… Why is this particular item so special to you?

My choice is my motorcycle. The feeling I get riding it has not been matched by anything else.

How did I know it would be something you could ride?

GloPro's avatar

Because I don’t currently own a gun?

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

Oops, I’ll take cover now.
Mine would be my pictures. They contain a lot of memories. Maybe not that valuable to others, but that’s what I would grab in the event I have a fire.

An NFL football signed by Don Shula and Dan Marino. Not only is the football special, but it also reminds me of the time I had spent with my family on that day.

My 1985 blue Stratocaster. I have had it now over 25 years and it never fails to make me feel great when I play it.

An amazing 4×4 original abstract painting I purchased from a local furniture maker turned artist about 9 years ago. Also my authentic temple gong, made of teakwood with carved, squating monks adorning the frame and a huge cymbal that resonates like a bass drum. Bruuuuung!

I want a gong!

@GloPro They are so cool….I love the sound.
I wanted to say my goose, but since you specified no living things, these are my two entries. haha

Mercedes GLK. I guess.

It’s a tossup between an old yamaha triple i spent a year restoring and my favorite guitar.

@Cruiser I’m a stratocaster freak. I buy finished necks, route bodies and wind my own pickups for them. Throw on some vintage tuners and Callaham hardware and you’re in rock and roll bliss. I need some tools to do necks and fretting then I’ll be making them from scratch.

@ARE_you_kidding_me That is so cool! The most I ever did was make a Frankenstrat out of a Strat Copy where I put in Dual single coils in the bridge postition and a humbucker in the neck position, EMG in the middle with a 2 way switch and 3 way toggle to mix and match the pickup configs. What stock do you cut your bodies from and what is the final weight?

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

It’s not conventional by any means but the last one I cut from a basswood blank. I have found that the body has little affect on tone, it’s the neck mainly and the junction of the neck to the body. Not sure about the weight. I’ll have to check

Pickups are my specialty though.

@ARE_you_kidding_me I’d be interested to learn more about the nuances of your pickups vs the stock Fenders. My Strat has EMG’s in it. My son surprised me by having the guitar worked over by a Lutier and he installed a hot pot that made the guitar way too hot for my taste and may switch it out to another tone control.

My watch which I have had for 36 years and still keeps perfect time.

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

@Cruiser it’s off topic but basically it depends on your rig and the style you play and the tone that works for you. I’ll say that i have found that leo fender got single coils correct back in the 1950’s and dimarzio got humbuckers right in the 1970’s.

Cruiser's avatar

@ARE_you_kidding_me I just can’t beat the sound of a Fender….it rings so clean and true. And not that it is a bad thing but Hummers create an electrical conflict that gives that unmistakable crunch that is great in a Gibson but that would be like putting crunch in a Steinway Concert Grand. I absolutely love that Trower/SRV Strat sound.

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

Humbuckers have their place and they can be made to sound clean and natural. People just prefer them overwound with ceramic magnets and that’s only good for hard rock. I play different styles and metal requires a humbucker. I usually put one on the bridge and two singles in the other positions (HSS).

Coloma's avatar

Okay @ARE_you_kidding_me and @Cruiser get a room and strum a little. lol

Cruiser's avatar

@Coloma There is no just strumming a Strat especially in a room. You can come up on stage and play tambourine and sing backup! ;)

Coloma's avatar

I’ll do it…can I bring my drums..forget the tambourine, I’m a percussionist!

Cruiser's avatar

@Coloma Drumming Circle!

Coloma's avatar

Yeah! :-)

GloPro's avatar

I just like the word humbucker.

Coloma's avatar

What’s a “Humbucker?” 0–0

longgone's avatar

My piano, hands down. Even just looking at it makes me happy, never mind playing.

Cruiser's avatar

@Coloma A humbucker is when a Cowboy is humming ‘Home on the Range’ and his horse bucks him off. Not something they want to brag about.

anniereborn's avatar

I’m gonna have to be boring and say my photos too. My entire life and history can be seen in them.

GloPro's avatar

@anniereborn I don’t think that’s boring. People that still take the time to print photos and have albums are rare anymore. I love my albums. I have so many I don’t think I could lug the trunk out if the house in a fire, but I might try.
