Can I use the same external hard drive for my iPad and laptop?

Never had the chance of using an external hard drive. My iPad will expire soon and considering use of it to save my digital books, songs and photos.

Is using an external hard drive simple or complicated-? I’m used to back-up my photos and songs burning them into discs. I don’t think I can do that with my books. Btw, I have a Macbook Pro for a laptop. Thanks.
