Where is Fluther's "Facebook drama" occurring?

Asked by PhiNotPi (12259 points ) May 20th, 2014

I have seen a few references recently to “discussions on FB.” To what is this referring? I don’t see anything posted on Fluther’s Facebook page.

There is a secret group that you have to be invited to. Also, sometimes there may be additional discussions on an individual’s page.

PhiNotPi's avatar

What is the point of having a secret group? What goes on in it?

jca's avatar

It is secret because people may be out in the open about who they are on Fluther. I certainly would not want my other FB friends to know who I am on Fluther, or that I am even on Fluther. What goes on in it? Just discussions about Fluther and sometimes postings that may related to Fluther discussions. It’s nice to be able to be there without being modded.

Also, many of us are friends with each other on FB. That gives our Fluthering a whole new dimension. It’s like here on Fluther we discuss certain private things and on FB we can see each other in a different way (family members’ photos, who’s having a lousy day, here’s my photo of my dog, etc.).

hug_of_war's avatar

Well that’s lovely. Being excluded rocks.

jca's avatar

If you guys are on FB, you can be invited. If you’re not, you can’t.

Mimishu1995's avatar

@jca I am on Facebook but so far no one has invited me yet. I have contacted Augie but she said she didn’t even know who maintains that group… Can you invite me @jca?

jca's avatar

Yes, Mimi.

I think it’s a perversion and abomination, and I flag the Facebook Fluther question!!

TAKE THAT!

Why would anyone want to be in a group that doesn’t want them?

GloPro's avatar

^^^ I think the real question is Why would anyone want to be on Facebook?

johnpowell's avatar

^^^ I hate Facebook more than I like Fluther.

downtide's avatar

Here’s some info about the FB group, as much as I know really:
“The group was formed by Jellies years ago as a place to discuss things on Fluther without their ‘real life’ friends and family seeing it. It is NOT an official Fluther site, and “Secret” is the name FB gives its groups that are private and invitation only.”

Personally as I don’t use FB (I have an account but avoid logging in as much as possible), I haven’t seen it.

ucme's avatar

I call it the Land of the Moronic Weaklings, although that title needs a little work.

jca's avatar

Yes, it’s by invite only. The administrator of the group can invite people, or members can invite others. As far as the group goes, to each his own. If someone doesn’t want to be in it, they of course don’t have to be.

ucme's avatar

I can just hear some of the inane drivel, ” oh & he is just awful & she makes my skin crawl & did you see what I said, wasn’t it hilarious & blah, blah, blah…”
No Fluther cliques? Hahahahahahahaha

cookieman's avatar

and could he just once not mention cookies in an answer?! WTF!

GloPro's avatar

I figured it out!!! The Secret group’s name is The Henhouse Jams and Jellies.
What a clever front. Henhouse jelly. Suuuure. ~
This information may be another nail in the coffin for some. That sucks.

turtlesandbox's avatar

@downtide is right. The group was formed at least 3 years ago, if not longer by users who are no longer active here. This is probably why the current active users here at Fluther are not aware of the group. It wasn’t very active when I joined a few years back. I doubt it is now, but I could be wrong.

PhiNotPi's avatar

Who is the administrator of this group?

FlyingWolf's avatar

Shit, I have been on Fluther for darn near six years and I had no idea there was a secret Fluther Facebook group! Learn something new every day.

Mimishu1995's avatar

@FlyingWolf I only knew about that group half a month ago. And even @PhiNotPi (despite being a mod) sounds susprised to hear about it too. You aren’t the only one :p

@PhiNotPi As far as I know, the ad there can be anyone but Augie (she isn’t even in the group).

jca's avatar

@cookieman: AKA The Fluminati.

Dan_Lyons's avatar

Here is a Fluther FB page, probably not this secret group, but a way to find it if you are curious.

Here’s a bunch of pictures of, apparently, people involved with creating Fluther or these may be real life pics of Jellies.

gailcalled's avatar

@Dan_Lyons: That Fluther link on Facebook was set up to report problems to Lisa and the mods when the server was down and you couldn’t access Fluther itself. I don’t know whether it still serves the same function or not.

ibstubro's avatar

Hey, I saw a picture of @johnpowell by backing up one @Dan_Lyons.

looked rather like a young bill gates.

jca's avatar

The Fluther secret group is not the same as the Fluther FB page.

Mimishu1995's avatar

That’s right @jca. If Fluther FB page was the secret group, it wouldn’t be a secret since anyone can find it.

cookieman's avatar

the fluminati cabal
shhhhh, be vewy, vewy quiet

jca's avatar

@cookieman: Shhhh. I can hear you!

FlyingWolf's avatar

@jca are you going to get kicked out of the secret group for revealing its existence to us mere mortals who were not on the list?

jca's avatar

@FlyingWolf: I don’t think so. Knowing about it is not an issue.

FlyingWolf's avatar

Disclaimer: this question is not meant to be snarky, it is serious.

@jca if people knowing about it isn’t a problem what makes it a secret group?

cookieman's avatar

^^ the handshake ?

jca's avatar

You can’t see anything in the t unless you are a member.

FlyingWolf's avatar

Oooooohhhhh a handshake! Teach me, teach me!

Mimishu1995's avatar

@FlyingWolf Some people, like me, don’t want anyone to know about their Fluther life. Therefore the group must be a secret. Moreover, even if people know about it but can’t access to it, then the secret will mostly remains secret.

GloPro's avatar

So anyone that PM’s someone in the group is invited? Do you vote? Or hasn’t it been an issue? Do you decide as a group to invite other jellies, or do you just decide and invite as an individual?

—Disclaimer I do not have Facebook.

jca's avatar

I have added people myself so that’s how it’s done. No votes nothing to vote on. It seems like the people who get added are typically people who have been around. In other words, I wouldn’t add someone who just joined Fluther yesterday because they might stay for two days and then leave.

GloPro's avatar

Is that a problem? If they don’t stay? You don’t get removed if you quit Fluther, right?
So everyone in the group may invite as they choose to, equally. Everyone is an admin?

dappled_leaves's avatar

Disclaimer: I am not in this Facebook group, and don’t want to be.

@GloPro I could see it being a problem if a brand new Fluther member (or old member in new guise) is admitted to the group, finds out everyone’s real-life identity, then causes shenanigans. There have been some crazy, unstable people on fluther in the past. If I were in the group, an open door policy would probably worry me.

It is a Facebook group, not an extension of Fluther. There is no reason why everyone on Fluther should be automatically admitted. Why shouldn’t people who have become friends on Fluther should be able to communicate via separate social media platforms, in whatever way they choose?

turtlesandbox's avatar

I may be mistaken, but I think the original users who created the group did not intend to have the group as large as it is. It was created by a couple (or few) Fluther friends (possibly the old chat room crew from several years ago) who were also friends on Facebook. They weren’t very active at Fluther when the group was created. The group quickly grew once mutual friends became aware of it and everyone started adding their Facebook/Fluther friends. I’m pretty sure the original creators of the group stopped using it once this happened.

anyone with more info., please correct me. This was only my observation when the group was created. I could be wrong.

jca's avatar

I am going to check now and see how many people are in the group.

@GloPro: That’s why we’re careful who we add. It’s not really an open door policy, we’re careful who we add. I recently added two people, both have over 10,000 lurve and are tried and true Fluther Jellies. Those are the only two people I have ever added.

jca's avatar

There are currently 56 members in the group. That’s a fairly intimate sized group, if you ask me. There are some people who are no longer on Fluther but again, they were pretty dedicated users when they were here.

If, by chance, people started adding people willy-nilly and the group got out of hand, it might be shut down or the ability to add others would be limited to just one or a few. Since nobody is doing anything malicious with adding people, we’re all trusted to add appropriate Facebookers.

FlyingWolf's avatar

So what is the criteria to get into said group? Under my former persona I had close to 30,000 and didn’t even know the group existed. Again, not trying to sound snarky, but this sounds like a pretty cliquey group. It seems a little inappropriate to be so open about it with a bunch of people who are seemingly unwelcome. It feels a bit like telling the entire class about a party that only a couple of classmates are invited to.

@turtlesandbox your explanation makes perfect sense and makes the group sound a lot less clique-like and more like a group of friends who wanted a place off Fluther to communicate.

jca's avatar

@FlyingWolf: I don’t think there’s any specific criteria, but as I stated, it seems to be Jellies who have been around a while. As for your specific case, why you had over 30 k and did not know about it, I don’t know. I have just tried to explain for the curious but it’s nothing anybody is bragging about. Maybe I’ll stop explaining because now I feel like people are blaming me.

GloPro's avatar

56 people. Didn’t we establish not too long ago that we had about 40 regular jellies? That doesn’t seem that intimate when you look at it that way.
I guess I don’t really see the difference other than sharing more personal information with one another. It’s like an extension of Fluther.
Hopefully those that felt excluded will be welcomed. For me, it’s just another reminder of the stronghold Facebook has on our society. I am excluded daily by something for refusing to be on Facebook. Each time strengthens my resolve NOT to get on board.
Have fun!

FlyingWolf's avatar

@jca you’re not being blamed for lack of invitations. I am just confused about you discussing something with everyone when only a select few are invited. People who have been excluded are usually better off not knowing about the club, it prevents hurt feelings.

dappled_leaves's avatar

@FlyingWolf She didn’t ask the question.

FlyingWolf's avatar

@dappled_leaves I understand that, she is however the one who brought up the Fluther Secret Group.

turtlesandbox's avatar

@GloPro I was excluded daily for refusing to use the chatroom when it was popular, but that was my decision for not liking the format. The Facebook group is just another outlet to use for friends from Fluther. I have no doubt that if you had a fb account and you were friends with users from Fluther, someone would add you to the group if you wanted to join.

I really believe the group was created for Fluther friends who were kind of tired of the site but wanted to stay connected somewhere, then word got out about the group and it grew. The reason why many current Fluther members have never heard of the group is because most members have moved on from Fluther. The reason why many older members weren’t aware is probably due to the fact that it really wasn’t that big of a deal and it wasn’t mentioned. People found out about the group because they saw it mentioned in the news feed of fb that their Fluther friend joined the group.

Yo Symbie, XD

Seek's avatar

I’d just like to point out that I still have not been invited to the secret Facebook group.

It’s ok, I know I’m not one of the cool kids. I’m used to it.

ucme's avatar

FB secret members/Cool kids…hahaha, funniest thing i’ve heard in the last six minutes.

GloPro's avatar

@Seek Well now I insist on an update when if you get in.

Symbeline's avatar

@Seek Yeah. I feel like Homer Simpson must have felt when he was a kid, and all the other kids made a ’‘No Homers Club’’.

Homer; But he’s named Homer! ’‘points to one of the kids’’

Club Member; Eh, we’re allowed one.
