Can I get some advice about using fluther?

Asked by Rolfadinho (93points) May 22nd, 2014 from iPhone

I just joined fluther tonight, so I have a few questions:

1) How do I exactly work around this site?

2) Is everything free?

3) Even though I already read the T&C, I have a question about it. Am I allowed to mention other users by their username, in non-threatening fashion, without their permission?

Thanks to all that answer.

Work around? What do you mean by that? You just ask and answer questions.

Yes, it is free.

No, you are generally not allowed to mention individual user names in a post.

Welcome to Fluther!

Well, you can mention other users if you’re talking about something they said in that thread but it is generally frowned upon to bring up users in a thread they aren’t participating in.

If you use the @ key a drop-down menu appears and you can choose that member’s name.

@marinelife

After you have submitted the answer, the @ + member name shows up as a red link. When you click this link in a thread you will be whisked up to that member’s last posting.

1. Ask, answer, discuss, PM, socialize, have fun :)
2. 100% FREE!
3. Yes, you can, in some ways.
– When you want to call the user who already answer the question or the asker. For example: @A asks a question you don’t really understand, you can call @A and ask for more details, or when @B answers @A’s question but you think it’s not right, you can call @B and show your point.
– When the threads demand you so. For example, there is a question asking: “Who do you think is good at math on Fluther?” Then you can say ”@C is good at math I think”.
– When you want to praise someone.

Welcome, and enjoy yourself :)

@Dan_Lyons Now that is cool. Thanks for showcasing me this feature, I can definitely use it at approximate times.

@Rolfadinho My pleasure. You can also click on members’ avatars and go to their home page(?) where you can see their bio (if they have written one) and you also have the option to follow them. I have no idea what following them means or does, but so far I am following a whole bunch!

Like @Mimishu1995 up there.

@Dan_Lyons Mostly the “follow” button is just like a way you show your respect to a jelly.

It’s just my interpretation :p

@Dan_Lyons when you’re following people you get another tab on the “Questions for you” page where you can view questions asked by those you follow

Oho, cool. Thanks @El_Cadejo

@Rolfadinho Welcome to Fluther. Be sure to read over our guidelines as well. Feel free to look over the site and jump right in with answering and asking questions. We also have chat rooms (link at the top), but they don’t get a lot of traffic these days. If you have any questions, you can ask as you did this one, or you can get in contact with the mods by the contact link at the top or through their profiles.

@Rolfadinho: Also, we refer to other Fluther users as “Jellies” (like jellyfish). You don’t have to, but usually that’s what we do.

Welcome and enjoy the site. If you stick around here, you’ll find we’re like a community. We tend to learn each other’s habits, moods, lifestyles, etc.

-There are four categories of questions, and they’re at the top:
1. general
2. social
3. just for you (questions picked out just for you by Dr. J)
4. meta

-Your username is on the top right. Below it are three categories:
1. Questions for you-this is the same as the “Just for you” tab; adding topics (explained below) helps you get more questions that relate to you
2. Messages for you-Individual users who send you private, personal messages
3. Activity for you-this lets you know when another Jelly has responded to a question you asked or answered

-Adding topics: At the bottom of the question box, there are orange-colored tags. Those are topics. If you hover over them, it will give you the option to add that topic. By adding a topic, it will show up on your profile and questions that have a topic you added will show up in your “just for you” tab. You can also search topics using the search bar at the top right.
-Dr. J is the godly Jellyfish character wearing glasses in the top left of the website. He looks down on all of us.

-“Jelly” is the demographic term for users of Fluther, although you’ll sometimes hear other terms.

-We have 6 volunteer moderators who help run the site to keep it alive (this includes deleting spam and questions/answers that are against the Guidelines).

Welcome to Fluther!

Oh, and a few more important things:

If there is a Jelly who you relate well with, are interested in, asks good questions, or whatever reason, you can go to their profile by clicking on their name (or searching), and at the top right there are two bars: “message” and “follow”.
-“Message” sends them a private message. This will show up in their “Messages for you” tab.
-“Follow” will add them to your fluther. Your fluther is a group of Jellies that you choose based on whatever reason. New questions that they ask will also show up in the “Just for you” tab.

The awards were an extra perk that was added around 2010. It’s just for achieving certain things. Here is a list of those achievements.

Last, but certainly not least: Lurve
Lurve is a point system here to congratulate you on your contributions to the site. It shows up right next to your name. (It’s the number, your lurve score is currently 56).
-Below every answer is a “Great Answer!” button. If you think someone’s answer is great, click on it to award them lurve for their excellent response. This will add 5 to their lurve score.
-Next to every question, there is a “Great Question” button. If you think a Jelly asked a great question, click on it and you will add 3 to their lurve score.
