If Fluther is on its death throes, what would be the likely cause of it?

Asked by Hypocrisy_Central (26879points) May 31st, 2014

Basically it would be what reason or condition that would be the doom of Fluther?

How much Ben cares.

Without numbers it is all speculation. Ads might not cover the costs of servers and Ben loves us. Or maybe he is making a decent profit and has pushed off all the work of keeping things running to Phi.

I wish there weren’t all those posts about Fluther dying. Kills the spirit :/

If Ben closes us down, there is absolutely nothing any of us can do, so I refuse to worry about that at this point.

If you’re referring to the death of discussion some people claim to notice, there is lots all of us can contribute: Questions, and answers. That’s the point of all this, isn’t it?

Berserker's avatar

As @johnpowell said in another thread, a huge problem that might not warrant getting fixed. (as per Ben’s decision to do so, or not)

People in general running out of fucks to give.

Adagio's avatar

People going on and on about the possibility, let’s just get on with it and enjoy it while it is here, no more if’s, when’s and why’s.

Not enough robust questions.

Why don’t we quit beating this to death and let it just play out? I’m so fucking tired of people wringing their hands over this. Whatever happens happens. Fuck it.

Berserker's avatar

Those who say that it will happen if we keep talking about it…you might be right. I just encountered a 500 server error for the passed five minutes…gah, noooo. Cmon Fluther, be well!

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

Guess at least someone is having a thirty party before it happens

Why isn’t there a thread about how to keep Dr. Jelly alive and well forever?

Some of the most liveliest, but controversial people are either gone, or rarely active on here. It can be tough to ask decent questions without offending others many times.

I still have regular contact with a former major contributor on here, who now frequents another website, but he’s probably not coming back here.

I’ve tried inviting people on here with a different view points on some topics, but none of them appear interested in coming here, and they only prefer to stay on their own sites. I guess fluther, like anything else in life, is what one makes of it.

It’s just like if people invite me to another site, I may not be interested. Things working for one may not work for other.

I love the way some are shitting fucking bricks over this, so much so that the mere mention of it sends them spinning into a confused rant.
As I said in my question the other day, I have no idea how long this place will last, could be months or years. There’s no denying the subject has become a bit of a hot topic
lately, particularly since Auggie put aside her managerial role.
No use burying heads in sand & lashing out at anyone who brings a touch of reality crashing in on their sensitive souls, that’s your weakness & yours alone.
For me, I hope this is just rumours & my question was purely for fun, a light hearted twist on the increasing “Fluther is doomed” chatter.
Long live Fluther & all who sail in her.

I haven’t been here long enough to have an opinion on whether or not the site is on the downward slope. As an askville refugee (more or less), I did notice for several weeks prior to the abrupt demise of the place that conversations such as this were frequent and on the increase.

stanleybmanly's avatar

@Pachy Are you poking at someone with the pitchfork of sarcasm, or is my paranoia acting up?

ben's avatar

Nothing going down anytime soon, so you can all breathe easy. :)

Mimishu1995's avatar

Hey! Good to see you, @ben the creator :)

Paradox25's avatar

Where did these rumors come? Ah, the question for the ages concerning the fuel of many gossip fests, where do any rumors originate?

Brian1946's avatar

@stanleybmanly

I think @Pachy is referring to this.

stanleybmanly's avatar

@Brian1946 I understood the reference. I was gently (I think) letting the elephant know that we got the sarcastic message. Did you know that rhinos and hippos are also pachyderms? A picture really IS worth a thousand words

Berserker's avatar

@ucme Hear hear, bro. Or is that…here here. Dammit Gail, where you at.

ucme's avatar

@Symbeline I believe your first example to be correct, “here, here” is for beckoning a pet :)

Seek's avatar

I thought it was “Hear here!” Like… “listen up, yo!”

ucme's avatar

Or for cockney London types, “ere, ere governor”

Being rude to new users. You can’t keep afloat if you drive everyone away. just sayin’

@ucme As I said in my question the other day, I have no idea how long this place will last, could be months or years.
How long it takes or if it happened tomorrow, is unimportant to me. I just wanted to know what people think would be the reason for the implosion. If anyone goes off on a tangent thinking the site is doomed, I can only say maybe they know something the rest of us don’t.

turtlesandbox's avatar

I would like to add to my previous comment about being rude to new users. I’ve not made it a secret that I am a former member who first joined many years ago, though not everyone has seen this admission of mine. I am treated as a new member by those who don’t know.

It’s very interesting being treated as a new user. I answer every question the same way I did with my former account, but I leave some more personal details out of my answers now. The responses that are directed at me by some of you are very different than what I would receive if I was using my old account. I now get rudeness and snark from people who used to be friendly with me, and I get kindness from people who used to not like me. Then there are those who are just jerks to everyone. It’s been very enlightening.

Mimishu1995's avatar

@turtlesandbox I have long suspected that you are an old user, since many of your comments show that you know a lot about Fluther. But I think being a “new” user yourself has helped you understand new users better.

turtlesandbox's avatar

It has Mimi. And I was probably rude to you at some point. I’m sorry.
