Have you ever been to Morocco?

Asked by Gifted_With_Languages (1143points) June 6th, 2014

How did you like it?

Morocco is a country about which I care a great deal because I live there three months of the year.
My parents have two villas over there and we also have a large field which we plan to convert into a hotel in the future (The field is the biggest we have ever had). The field has plenty of potential to offer.
We live in a small seaside resort, a small fishing village called Souiria Kedima.
By way of background, this small village is situated near the nearest city, called Safi and not too far from Essaouira (at approximately 90 kilometers from where I live).
Turning now to the people, the Moroccan are incredibly welcoming. The scenery is absolutely gorgeous.

For those who have had the chance to travel to Morocco, I am interested in your reviews.

If you have never been to Morocco as of now, I highly recommend staying there for at least two weeks for it is an exceptional country.

Thank you for your answers.

My Mom (aka The World Traveler”) enjoyed her trip to Morocco.
While she was in the city of Fez, she got me a fez hat. When I am feeling silly, I wear it, much to the chagrin of anyone I am near.

I spent five years of my life there. Some of the best years of my life. So many things to do and places to visit!!

Yes, my partner and I stayed in Marrakesh for a week a few years ago. How to describe that visit? Instead of staying at one of the larger hotels on the outskirts like the rest of the British travelers, we chose to stay at a riad (sort of a B&B) near the souks. The owners were fantastically hospitable.

They renovated their riad to look as authentic as possible. Each morning, breakfast was served on the rooftop with a beautiful view of the Atlas Mountains. We learned to return to the hotel each evening so that we could clean up and have a leisurely dinner of authentic cuisine prepared by one of the co-owners and staff. Each morning, we would awake to the call to prayer from a mosque just around the corner.

The days were spent wandering around the city in order to see all of the sites and absorb the culture. We found ourselves lost more than once in the maze of small streets. One day, we walked along the city wall with the intent to visit all of the babs (gates). Each afternoon, we would find a place to rest and reflect while enjoying a cup of mint tea.

While day excursions to Casablanca or out into the desert were discussed, we found enough to do on our own. After our return, we both had dreams for weeks of the exotic experience that tantalized all senses.

Probably what surprised me the most was to learn how progressive Morocco is in their government’s thought process compared to other North African countries.

I’ve never been there, but I have had the pleasure of meeting several people from there over the years. I live in America and all the people I knew were now living in America. They were all very outgoing, friendly, with a good sense of humor. They seemed to enjoy life and be very in the moment. I do have a stereotype of the men being womanizers, but I don’t assume it about all the men. Hell, my husband is from Latin America, and that region has the same stereotype, but my husband does not live up to the stereotype thank goodness.
