Which choice would you prefer, a chance to work at a great paying job you enjoy, or the freedom to live your life as you choose? (Please read details)

Asked by Paradox25 (10223points) June 14th, 2014

Would you be willing to give up important things in your life if your dream job required this? Examples could be giving up smoking, drinking, marijuana, etc. What if what you had to give up was extended to what you eat, your religion, lack of belief, political affiliation, lifestyle, etc? Is there a line where you would consider it justifiable to ditch that so-called dream job for personal freedom?

No. I have strong convictions about not being enslaved to the societal machine.
I have always been about freedom and have managed quite well up until the economic downturn hit and dashed my Titantic against the Ice Berg. haha
Right now I am seeking new, creative work options and might have found something that will restore my freedom after the last 15 months of service in a job I hate.

If it’s a dream job would that not be what you want to do? If it invades your private life to the extent of dictating what you eat then is it a dream job? I know for my work I have to stay in reasonable shape, I can’t do any drugs including mary jane and while most people I work with are conservative I’m a centrist so I just don’t talk about politics much at work. I’m ok with all of that, it’s just part of the job and I get paid to do some cool stuff on occasion. There is no ideal job, that is a fairy tale.

The things you name either don’t apply to me or are things I would not probably give up, with the exception of what I eat maybe. If I could make a million dollars a year looking fabulous I might eat a little less and a little healthier.

I have worked in jobs that really strained me physically including having to wake up early, which for me is a lifestyle thing, and it really is awful. I don’t want to do that to any extreme ever again. I would only if I had to. Not to mention it was not for great paying jobs, but it doesn’t have to be great paying to have to do it. I need to pay my bills. I guess I would do it again to make a very high salary knowing I would quit after two years and save every penny I could.

I have neither. I just want to live in peace.

I can’t imagine calling anything a “dream job” if it required me to give up things that I enjoy doing.

My dream job requires no changing on my part.

I had a great paying job in the past. I had a nervous breakdown. I have a great paying job now, doing something most people would not want to do. I have entire freedom. Everytime I see the 7am bus into the city go past when I’m getting the paper I’m so glad I’m not on it.

I was motivated to ask this question because this issue may become much more of a factor in the near future then we realize. I knew a guy who gave up smoking cigarettes so he could work for a hospital.

In that case the job did him a favor. However, whether or not I end my night with a gin and tonic has no bearing on my ability to do my job. People that take 900 smoke breaks a day, however, actually cut into productivity.
