Have any of you ever eaten a "red snapper" hot dog from Maine?

Asked by flip86 (6213points) June 18th, 2014

They are a natural casing frank with a characteristic snap when you bite into them. They are a lot better than your average hot dog. BBQ’s in Maine are not complete without red hot dogs. Not to be confused with red hots from Chicago.

Even when I ate meat, I didn’t do hot dogs (or sausage, or spam, or bologna…). And submucosal intestines (natural casings) are not something I want to eat, either.

I’ve never had one, but I live a couple of blocks from the Vienna Beef factory so there’s no need to travel to find Earth’s best hotdogs.

I’d try the Maine dog, though. That sounds pretty good.

I’m a Hebrew National hot dog girl all the way but yours sound good too. “Everything in moderation” is my diet mantra and so far it’s working for me.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

No but they sound good.

@syz Why waste a part of the animal? You kill it for food, you might as well use the most of it you can. Intestines included.

The only hot dog I will eat anymore is a Pink’s Chili Dog from the hot dog stand on Melrose and LaBrea in L.A.

I ate red hot dogs in Copenhagen from a street vendor. Quite delicious, don;t know if it is the same as whatever they make in the State of Maine.

If you are in Maine, why would you eat anything besides lobster?

flip86's avatar

@zenvelo I don’t like seafood. The smell alone makes me gag.

janbb's avatar

@flip86 Sounds like Maine is wasted on you – unless you like blueberry pie!

flip86's avatar

@janbb Maine is wasted on me because I don’t like sea bugs? Maine is known for potatoes too. I love Maine potatoes.

@flip86 You’re good then! Enjoy it!

@flip86 Might as well move to Idaho.

I’m not a big fan of hot dogs any more (used to eat packets of Nathan’s in high school), but this is something on my wish list

I’m a Nathan’s girl.

Did you hear the one about the good-looking girl who went on a fishing trip to main with six old men?
She came home with a red snapper.

Hey, this one time I went into a bar and asked the barkeep for a double entendre, so he gave it to me.

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

I was going to say something about hot dogs and snapper but I’ll let UCME answer.

flip86's avatar

@zenvelo Why should I move? I don’t like seafood. So what? The stuff is nasty. Maine has way more to offer than just seafood.

I was hoping that this was going to be a question about a sausage made from fish. I’ve seen salmon sausages, but they were fresh, uncooked, and I was too far from home to buy them at Whole Foods. When I went back prepared, I couldn’t find them.

I remember Polish sausages having that ‘snap’ when I was a kid. We were big on Polish sausages. And I always loved liver sausage.

flip86's avatar

@ibstubro It’s a pork and beef dog. No poultry and definitely no fish.

ibstubro's avatar

I got that, @flip86. But with a title like “red snapper dog from Maine” I could always hope.

I do remember the ‘snap’ of a sausage in natural casing.
