How do you replace a broken spool pin on a Brother SE-400?

I inherited a Brother SE-400 sewing machine…unfortunately the spool pin made of plastic is broken…I can order a new one but how do I get the broken one off? There is a metal lever on one side but I cannot move it and do not want to force it! Help please and thanks in advance for any hints!
