What happens to the old ”axe” (guitar) when a new one is purchased?

It may have changed over time, but when I seen Paul McCartney playing, be it with the Beatles, or Wings, he had the same bass. However, other musicians I see change up, they have a white guitar on this tour, a red one in footage of a different tour years later, etc. What do they do with the guitar they replaced? Do they auction it off for charity, keep it for nostalgia sake, give it to one of the roadies or friends, keep it as a trusty backup, etc.?
