[NSFW] Do you think it's wrong to have sexually explicit books opened freely in a book store?

Asked by rockfan (14627points) July 14th, 2014

I went to Half Price Books today, and I saw an opened Kama Sutra Manual book in the History section, complete with real life examples of sexual positions. The book store sells used books, so I’m assuming the book never had plastic wrapped around it. I’ve also seen picture books at Barnes and Noble with graphic nudity. I think it’s funny how movie theaters are so strict about movie ratings, but book stores have no policy about books and nudity. What do you think?

By the way, I’m in no way a prude, I just think it’s interesting.

No, it is not morally wrong.

The age old division between “art” and “prurient interest”.

Go to any art museum and of course, you might be both an art appreciator AND a perv, but acting as if you look only at the artistic value of the work… well… nobody needs to know anything else.

I agree completely with @rockfan. It’s very interesting how we interpret sexuality based on
the context.

No. A couple of children giggling over a copy of the Kama Sutra will quickly be noticed by staff, and chased off.

I think there must be a place in every bookstore with this book category but not mixed with the other books. This way nobody has a problem!

@dina_didi Like a porn curtain? I don’t see that happening anytime soon. ;)

It’s really not a big deal. No special section required. The last thing any bookstore wants to do is intimidate people away from specific books. It wouldn’t be good for business; they may as well not carry the books at all if they’re going to do that.

It takes a very prudish bookstore manager to avoid putting sexually explicit content on the shelves.

haha! @dappled_leaves not exactly what was on my mind but something like that :p Nothing that needs to be hidden with a curtain but no kama sutra mixed with fairy tales

I don’t think it’s wrong. I think it’s weird how prudish (I’m not saying you are @rockfan) we can be about sex/nudity but violence seems to be accepted in films/books etc. I wouldn’t want to see pornographic magazines mixed in with other mags on the newsagent shelf but I’d prefer to see us lightening up about sexuality and nudity.

A free and uncensored press!

I would have totally done that when I was 16. It is pretty funny. I wouldn’t assume that it was sanctioned by the bookstore.

No, it’s not wrong. How could it be? That’s where many of us learned about sex.

Some people would like to finger through…the pages.
