(NSFW) What is life like for a porn star?

Asked by Eggie (5921points) August 9th, 2014

Do porn stars lead happy, comfortable lives? I wonder if they feel comfortable doing daily things like going to the grocery store, beach etc. Are their lives fabulous because they earn a lot of money per month? How do their children feel about their profession? Do any of you all know any porn stars personally in real life?

The following is based on observation and speculation:

As far as mainstream pornography based on the old school is concerned I imagine it can be lonely. “Porn stars” claim in interviews that they are starved for low key psychological intimacy. I can imagine that such performers are required to work at a very unsexy rapid clip.

I suspect that for more niche stuff there is at least some sense of community, since the special interests I identify with most have that in real world scenes.

Video produced by small kink houses that have “staff” that clearly know what they are doing understand that the scene environment, it’s energy if you will is important. Actor/models appear to actually be inside the headspace, enjoying what they are experiencing.

I think that it depends on how successful (well known) the star is. If it’s someone established who has pretty constant work and makes a good salary, then life would likely be pretty good.

If the person is a ‘starving actor” who is just trying to break into the business, it’s rough, like it would be for any actor or artist.

It also depends on whether the person has gotten into drugs (which complicates that person’s life and runs their finances). And whether the person has a good financial planner and can keep to a budget.

Bottom line, a porn actor or actress is live any one of the rest of us. Some are successful and some live lives of quiet desperation.

Regarding the specifics in the question’s details, probably for a porn star, going to the grocery store or beach is not a whole lot different than the average person’s experience. Probably when they’re wearing regular clothes (as opposed to no clothes haha) with hair done in an “average person’s style,” nobody notices them. Just like regular celebs out in the city or public not many people notice them or care. Only the ones that travel with entourages and take chauffered vehicles, like maybe the Kardashians or Lindsey Lohan or whatever, really stand out. Sometimes the local paper, like NY Post, will publish a photo of a celeb doing their every day stuff like shopping or out with a baby stroller, and they look no different than anybody else.

NSFW (documentary)

Kelly (performer/model name Dors Feline) represents a personal quandry.

She, like others, considers her moneymaking assets to also be a literal burden. She has had her 34L breasts reduced to a claimed 34C.

She states that her breasts were a source of crippling anxiety. In her videos it’s difficult to believe that she doesn’t find them to be the stuff of self satisfaction and pleasure. Such is the world of acting.

Kelly is stunningly beautiful with a dreamy full figure and round belly (wimper). The juxtaposition of a large soft body and delicate facial features drives me crazy.

She appears to have a satisfying social life outside the mainstream old school pornculture scene. That’s what I would strive for if I were in the business.

It is her body and her mind, I hope the best for her.

Run=of-the-mill porn actors don’t earn very much money. The very top women stars may earn $1,500 – $5,000, but usually $500 to $1,000. And men earn half that amount. No royalties, no cut of the gross, no residuals.

And it is not a long career, just a few years in most cases.

I’ve seen a few of them interviewed and they all spoke as if they had it made in life with no problems of any kind. Everything was peaches and cream. lol

Not exactly to your question, but this study crunches the data of 10,000 porn actors listed in the Internet Adult Film Database.

It has its ups and downs

and in and outs

I think that for the most part they have a very limited span of time that they are a marketable product (Ron Jeremy excepted) and that you have to be able to take whatever you make and put it into something with a longer term financial benefit.

@zenvelo “And men earn half that amount.”

But the guys do all the (ahem) work. The women just need to move around, make some noises, and pretend that they’re experiencing pleasure.

@SadieMartinPaul Men (who are the ones who buy) don’t buy to see the man so much as to see the woman being fucked. The masturbatory fantasy for men is that they can place themselves into the film as the man and perform the same way with the woman.

I saw a porn star being interviewed once and she was saying that the day before a shoot, she does not eat much at all. She takes laxatives and the day of the shoot she does not eat and takes enemas so she is cleaned out.

They also all have to be shaven, manicured and pedicured, great hair (which, if you know what a good dye job costs it’s not cheap) and makeup, tanned, fake tits and the works. That all costs money. I think they make side money by doing trade shows, charging for personal appearances and merchandise.

@zenvelo That makes sense. When the male viewers place themselves into the film, they also take on that enormous endowment and the big “money shot.”

From everything I have seen on interviews and documentaries they are not usually very happy about their line of work and they wind up doing things they don’t want to do. Many of them use alcohol and drugs to get through it. Anal sex seems altogether too popular in a lot of porn in the last 20 years and I have seen more than once porn stars talk about really not wanting to do it, or being hurt by it at times and that they have to do prep for it.

< is at present not a porn star but is a sex worker. I have known and talked to sex film workers. From what I could gather they do more work for less money. Most have normal lives off camera, kids, cars, house etc. As for myself a very ordinary life, kids don’t know of course, a normal life and partner ( who does know), a very nice and normal life.
