Etiquette-related question about online purchasing: Do you just leave sellers hanging?

Asked by Pachy (18610points) August 19th, 2014

When you contact a Craigslist or Ebay seller expressing interest in the item and then decide for whatever reason not to purchase, do you email to let them know?

Unless I forget, yes.

I try to always remain in contact with individuals that I am making purchases from if a follow-up is necessary. I also leave feedback to people I make purchases from on Etsy and Ebay. I always forget to leave feedback to sellers on Amazon, though.

I let them know. It takes two seconds.

No. Are they going to let me know if someone else comes along and buys it before I make up my mind?

@zenvelo, I always let people know when I’ve decided to sell to someone else. Common courtesy.

I always try not to leave anyone hanging, including here on Fluther. On Fluther, I’m mildly annoyed when someone asks a question and there’s absolutely no response or feedback from the OP whatsoever. No comment, not even a GA. It’s like they asked the question and then disappeared. I, for one, like to know if my answer was useful to them.
On sites like Craigslist, if I’m a buyer, I’ll let the seller know if I’m no longer interested or if I’ve bought elsewhere. If I’m a seller, I’ll tell the buyer if I’ve already sold the item. I put myself in their shoes. I’d like to know.
Recently, I interviewed property managers. After I made my choice, I let the others know that I had chosen someone else. Instead of getting angry, every single one of them wrote back thanking me for telling them and not leaving them hanging. And it didn’t take much effort. Just a simple note saying, “Thank you for your time, but I decided to go with someone else. I wish you well.”

Sure. Why not take 2 seconds out of my life to remove any anxiety on their end?

I just noticed that the details ask the question in the opposite direction to the actual question:

Question: Do you just leave sellers hanging?
Details: Do you email them to let them know?

Hence, reading the responses is a bit confusing!

I leave sellers hanging depending on whay my question is. When I’m selling I just answer any questions without any thought of the person actually buying. Honestly it’s kind of annoying to me when people email me and say they are not interested. I’m really only want to hear anything if they are interested.

It’s nice to let them know. My dad sells online and he has some buyers who write him that they received the item and thank him. He loves getting those notes.

Sorry my question/details seem in conflict to you, @dappled_leaves . Seemes clear to me, but what do I know?

longgone's avatar

^ They are clear, they just happen to force a full answer. Writing simply “yes“or “no” would not suffice – I think that’s what @dappled_leaves is saying.

@Pachy Exactly as @longgone said – the questions are clear, but if someone begins “No”, they might be answering either the question in the title, or the question in the details.

So, @flutherother‘s “I would” might agree with my “Sure.” (which answers “Do you email them?”) Or it might mean that he’s going to “leave them hanging.”

Meh. It’s not important, just something I noticed.

@dappled_leaves, thanks for the clarification.

I meant I would email them.
