How long have you had the mobile?

talljasperman's avatar

Two months. The phone was free.

I think the only way to get out of the plan is to pay the penalty and walk away.
I’m not north of the border but I think the penalty would equal the retail cost of the phone which could be several hundred dollars !

Stop making 411 calls and save up to buy yourself out of the plan.

I’m assuming you got this phone with the plan at a reduced price or for free. This how these companies are able to offer you a phone at a discount – they lock you into a 2 year contract and part of that contract involves a data plan. You can’t cancel the data plan without breaking the contract.

If you cancel the data plan, they’ll have you pay the retail value of the phone minus whatever upfront cost you paid for it. Considering these smartphones cost $600 retail, that’s a lot of money.

I suggest keeping the data plan. $68/month for a cell phone plan is actually pretty good. But STOP MAKING 411 CALLS. You will save yourself $40/month. There is no need to make 411 calls when you have a smartphone. There are a number of free apps that will allow you to look up business information. You can also use Google to google the name of businesses and look up their info. Stop calling 411.

With the deregulation of cell phone laws in Canada I don’t think it’s very hard to get out of contracts anymore, is the cost of a free phone really worth it??
I have a month to month plan, and only have to give 30days notice and opt out with no penalty, but no free phone either.

Why call 411 when you have a smartpone? Google the business and save your money.

Also, if you’re not the sort to need a super-up-to-the-minute phone, you may be better off buying a cheap used phone and switching to a sim-only plan (which will likely be less than half what you’re paying now).

Assuming you can get a sim-only plan for, say $25 a month, and a used phone for $200, and you stop calling 411, if the cancellation fee is $600 or less, you’re better off cancelling.

Heres the math: 22(months left) x $68 = $1496 (in almost 2 years)

24 x $25 = $600 + $200 for the phone = $800 (for full 2 years)

$1496 – $800 = $696 saving.

@SQUEEKY2

If you want a smartphone, then yeah, it’s worth it, considering that most smartphones cost $600 new.

I am in the US and on contract with Verizon. If the price is agreeable to you and you are happy with the service and don’t have any intentions to cancel, then signing a contract can be a good idea.

You probably can’t. The phinenisn’t really free, you are just paying it over time in the payments, so there will be a penalty, whoch is basically buying the phone. If you can buy the phone and then get a better plan with that same phone then it might be worth it.

I also don’t understand why you are using 411 so much?

Dutchess_III's avatar

Hey…you can get information for free by dialing the area code you are looking for + 555–1212. It’s free.
Also, for a while, I used to be able to text google and get information that way, but it hasn’t worked the last two times.

JLeslie's avatar

@Dutchess_III dialing 555–1212 is the same as 411. I am pretty sure I used to pay for it, I haven’t used it in years. In MI they didn’t have 411 when I lived there. My MI friends there had never heard of it. Or, maybe I was charged because I used to use 555 for long distance look up back when we paid for long distance?

Dutchess_III's avatar

I don’t get charged for it.

But, like someone said, he has a smart phone. He can just google the place he wants to call.

jerv's avatar

By paying the early termination fee. If you stop using 411 and start using your smartphone as intended, you will save enough to cover that fairly quickly. Learning to do things right saves money!

rojo's avatar

I am not suggesting this yes I am, who am I trying to kid If you don’t have much of a credit score to worry about just walk away from it. If you aren’t using the phone/number they can’t bug you much for payments can they?

Tropical_Willie's avatar

$40.00 a month means hours of calls for 411.

talljasperman's avatar

@Tropical_Willie #taxi mostly. $3.00 /call. Gets the fastest cab in town.

stanleybmanly's avatar

I have no knowledge and therefore no advice on wireless doings in the “true North strong and free”, but have learned some handy tricks for dumping U.S. regulated plans.

dappled_leaves's avatar

@talljasperman ”#taxi mostly. $3.00 /call. Gets the fastest cab in town.”

That is crazy. They are surely just picking a company at random and dialling – you can do exactly the same thing by saving the numbers of the – what… 3? 4? – cab companies in your town.

jerv's avatar

I got fast taxis by tipping certain cabbies well and knowing their schedules. If you habitually pay $20 on a $12 fare, you tend to be remembered and get fast service.

seekingwolf's avatar

You do realize that 411 doesn’t know anything about the speed of your local cabs, right? Save the cab numbers and dial them directly yourself. You’ll save a lot of $$.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I’m just dying to know why so many 411 calls??

jerv's avatar

@seekingwolf I doubt he does, actually. You do realize who we’re talking about here, right? Don’t get me wrong, I like the guy, but he is rather naive and has all sorts of weird notions.

seekingwolf's avatar

@jery Yeah I know, I’ve seen him around here. Sorry, I just get a little stunned sometimes when I realize how naive people can be.
