Do you think it's safer to go the speed limit, or 5 mph below the speed limit, or 5 mph above?

I always go about 5 mph over the speed limit. It helps me avoid “pulling a train” behind me and it usually keeps me away from the crowds.

5 mph over is safer . That’s what the rest of the traffic is doing.

My goal is to do slightly more than the rest of the traffic so I can get out of the crowd. Going 5mph less would help to a certain extent, but then you have people piling up behind you who are afraid to pass.

I like to go slightly above the speed limit as well, I really detest being in a parade ,like to be out on my own.

No absolute rule of thumb for me. I try to stick to the posted speed limit, or slightly under it, (radar traps are everywhere here) and gauge what’s safe to do depending on the current conditions. I’m especially nervous about children, bikers and cell phone users, so I feel better about being under the limit rather than over it in order to be able to react quickly.

Well, I was thinking of highway driving. I do the speed limit in town.

This is not how speed works.

Speed is merely one of many considerations given any driving situation.

Speed limits are purely arbitrary. Speed handling capacity of the particular roadway excepted.

Ask yourself: What you drive, the way you drive: Are you really safe for the rest of us at any velocity?

5 miles high.

I try for the posted limit, but if I’m really tired I just go slower and slower until I realize I’m going too slow and then I speed up again. I’ve had policemen stop me before because my driving appeared strange. When I explained that I really just wanted to go home and was really tired, they’ve checked if I had been drinking (I do not drink), and then sent me on my way.

^^^Use your cruise. Unless you’re in town.

@Dutchess_III Yeah, when I’m that tired (always at night), I’m not that with it, and I’m normally not that far from my destination, and usually in town. It’s rare that I’m that tired, thankfully.

You could get a DWT for that @snowberry!
