How can I get the best deal when purchasing multiple appliances?

Asked by ItalianPrincess1217 (11979points) September 30th, 2014

Recently my dishwasher broke. Right after that my washing machine broke. Fantastic luck, right? Is there anything I can do to get some kind of deal when shopping for these types of appliances? They aren’t exactly related but I’m hoping there’s some trick when buying appliances that can save me money. Here are some stores near me:

The Home Depot
Lowes
Best Buy
Sears

You can often get good discounts by buying the floor models. I did that with my last set of Maytags. The washer and dryer were slightly mismatched, you really couldn’t even tell, and I got about $300 off on the pair at Best Buy I believe. Ask if the floor/display models are for sale, worked for me.

We bought a reconditioned appliance. So far it’s been a good machine and we got a great deal.

@snowberry Where can I find reconditioned appliances?

@ItalianPrincess1217 Look up Used Appliances in the Yellow Pages. Here’s a link for used appliances in Indianapolis, Indiana.

@ItalianPrincess1217 I’m sure you know this, but keep in mind you’ll want to purchase “like new” models.

Also, try searching for “scratch and dent” appliances. This means they’ve been damaged during transport. I have seen whole stores dedicated to “scratch and dent”.

I know Sears has outlet stores, but when I was in there, the prices were about average. However, that’s the place I’d expect to find some amazing sales from time to time.

Home Depot and Lowes have return & scratched items at a discount.

I had to buy a washing machine last week and I stopped by the local Home Depot. They had three discounted scratch/dent/returned washers. They didn’t fit my needs, but I am glad I looked.

The best way to find discounts is to go to place where the sales people are on commission. Walk in and tell them “I need two different appliances – make me a good deal and I’ll buy from you”.

Commissioned people have a lot more latitude to “bargain” than people who are straight salary.\

Also, I would never ever ever ever ever buy a reconditioned appliance. You are getting a crappy warranty and you are buying someone else’s broken machine. Scratch and dent are OK – but reconditioned – NEVER.

Along the lines of what @elbanditoroso is saying, don;t go to a chain, go to an appliance store.

We have one in our area, and they come in at great prices. If they can’t meet the actual dollar cost, they can beat it by doing things like throw in the delivery and installation.

Sometimes the Sears distribution center will have a “Dent & Scratch” showroom may also have reconditioned appliances. In Connecticut it was 4000 square feet.
