Is Sweden, compared to New York City, more gay-friendly?

Asked by wsxwh111 (2464points) October 4th, 2014

As is asked above, I’m a gay student and since my country doesn’t take this thing cool, maybe I’ll try to find somewhere else to live in the future.
I’m well educated in my third year in university and is heading abroad. So when it comes to the attitude towards LGBT people, which place do you think is better… NYC or Sweden?
Thanks a lot!

From my limited experience, it is impossible to be more open to diversity than Sweden.

NYC is extremely gay friendly and has a lot of gay people living there.

I’ve never been to Sweden, but I think of that country as being very open.

I wouldn’t have one worry about being gay in either place.

It would probably be about the same. Question is, would you be able to handle other more important issues like the awful weather and language/culture difference?

Here is a list of the 12 most LGBT-friendly countries. Note that the USA comes in at 12th of 12, and Sweden isn’t on the list. However, Sweden legalized same-sex marriages back in 2009, so they beat the US in that statistic.

Since you mention New York City (a city, compared to Sweden, which is a country), if you decide to live in the US, NYC is ranked as #2 in most gay-friendly cities. Top gay-friendly cities in the world are on this list.

Not that you asked for our opinions, but I agree with @ZEPHYRA. Gay-friendly is an important factor in what country to consider, but there are others that are even more important.

I don’t know how much credit I’d give that survey. Czech Republic has the lowest acceptance rate? What about Nigeria or Saudi Arabia—where you can get the death penalty for being gay?
What about just about all of the Middle East, Africa and South America?

@keobooks The article is about the countries that are most accepting of the LGBT community. The Czech Republic is one of them.

Here is more information on the survey results from the Pew Research Center. The Global Divide on Homosexuality Note: Survey results are only for 39 countries.

Thanks, guys.
I do read a lot of investigations about this question.
I think maybe Sweden is good, but I’ve decided to try to go to New York. American has a lot of great people, one can get a lot of information there, and, New York is a large fantastic city, which I love a lot:).
Thank you guys.

I think you will be happy. New York has a very large gay population and also a very large Chinese population. My sister just moved to China town and her location is great and she recently trained an intern who I met a few months ago who was from China and I think she really enjoyed NYC.

Update us on how everything goes.

@JLeslie Thanks! I’ve heard discrimination against LGBT people from Chinese people living in USA is even more than those in mainland, though.
But still going there.:)
