What's a close substitute for fattening ice cream ?

Asked by Aster (20023points) October 5th, 2014

A friend of mine eats yogurt with fresh fruit. Would that be a good substitute for ice cream and, if so, what kind or brand of yogurt? I have no objection to eating yogurt with sugar in it IF it is much less fattening than ice cream.
Maybe I’m just dreaming.

Vanilla yogurt is good with fresh fruit but it’s not ice cream.

There are lowfat ice milk and frozen yogurts if you want a dairy texture; and also sorbets with no fat or dairy.

dappled_leaves's avatar

Sorbet? Depending on the sugar content, it must be healthier, since it doesn’t contain cream.

tedibear's avatar

Why not just eat a smaller portion of ice cream and enjoy it?

Greek yogurt is really satisfying. The “Muller Corner” yogurts are vanilla flavored with little treats in a side compartment, like strawberry compote or milk duds. They’re delicious.

Gelato. Or simply eat half your normal portion of ice cream.

dappled_leaves's avatar

@gailcalled Isn’t gelato even more fattening than ice cream?

Edit: just read your link, which says gelato is less fattening. It’s odd, because I tend to associate gelato with egg yolks, which makes me think it will be more fattening. However, it’s hard to tell what goes into gelato anymore; from the sound of the Wikipedia page, additives are needed to keep it stable. I wonder if commercially-produced gelato is less fattening, but homemade gelato might be more so?

I hate yogurt.

Good gelato typically has a third to half the fat of regular ice cream and it is delicious. Paciugo franchise has the best gelato this side of the Atlantic. see if there is one by you.

I personally like chocolate covered frozen bananas. The chocolate that hardens when cold is fairly fatty though, but it is still much healthier than a typical ice cream sunday.

Sometimes I just eat a refrigerated banana with some chocolate sauce or caramel, add some cherries. Basically, I make the banana split without the ice cream.

Thing is I am not a big ice cream person to begin with, so I don’t feel like I am missing anything.

@JLeslie “Good gelato typically has a third to half the fat of regular ice cream”

That is so disappointing! I’ve never liked gelato, so was always secretly glad that it was “more fattening”.

Gelato has less air or something. Gelato like ice cream sometimes has egg yolk, it depends on the flavor. You might be thinking of frozen custard, a different thing.

I don’t understand not liking gelato if you like ice cream. Although, I don’t like most Ben and Jerry’s because I find it too creamy, which is the very thing they boast about; the higher fat content. Although, I do like their business philosophy and the tour of their plant in VT is worth a trip if you’re there.

dappled_leaves's avatar

@JLeslie Honestly, I try it every few years, because I can’t believe I don’t like it.

I don’t like it.

Something about the texture really bothers me; I’m not sure if finding just the right flavour would alleviate that. But it’s not really worth it to me to go on such a quest.

JLeslie's avatar

I get it. I try blueberries every few years, and still hate them. Once in a while I get a piece of a fresh tomato in a salad and blech gross. Then there is the fact I don’t like cheesecake, and that especially is not worth trying to develop a taste for or pursuing a recipe or brand I might find palatable. People usually are shocked I don’t like any of those.

dappled_leaves's avatar

Haha, agreed. I’m still convinced that cheesecake is an “emperor’s new clothes” scam.

JLeslie's avatar

For my husband cheesecake was one of those yummy “American” foods when he used to first visit here when he was little. That and corn dogs.

livelaughlove21's avatar

Ice cream is only “fattening” if you eat too much of it, just like every other food.

There is no substitute for ice cream. Yogurt is fine, but it’s not ice cream.

Coconut milk ice cream is AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS. I consider myself an ice cream connoisseur and I totally dig coconut milk ice cream. My favorite is Coconut Bliss Chocolate Salted Caramel. OMG.

JLeslie's avatar

Coconut sorbet is very good too without the dairy. Although, coconut itself is high in fat.

If you slice up bananas and then freeze them, they make a really nice soft-serve ice cream texture when run through a food processor or blender.

As a matter of fact, they’re currently selling some contraption to make ice cream from frozen bananas but I don’t know why anyone in their right mind would buy it when a blender works just as well.

Here it is:

www.yonanas.com

Another option would be to blend together avocado and cocoa powder with your choice of sweetener. A little unorthodox but makes great tasting chocolate ice cream.

Avocados do contain fat but it’s a really healthy fat. Its really good for you A sensible diet isn’t ONLY about how many calories something contains. It’s also about the quality of the nutrition which the food provides.

Tragically, despite the best of hype, there is no substitute for butter fat laden quality ice cream, though soft serve frozen yogurt can be damned good tasting stuff.

Aster's avatar

You know, I used to eat frozen yogurt and loved it. I wonder how fattening it is? I could put it in my Vitamix. My s/o won’t eat it which is probably why we forgot about it. He won’t eat anything unless it’s fattening or carcinogenic.
Thanks @stanleybmanly .

Take him to one of those soft serve yogurt shops where you’re allowed to fill your own cup or tub. The taste and texture is greatly superior (to my mind) compared to the frozen yogurts sold in the supermarkets.

Aster's avatar

We don’t have one in this dumb town. I used to buy it in half gallon containers.

Buttonstc's avatar

Since you have a Vitamix, the frozen bananas should do the trick. They have a creamy mouth feel (when blended frozen) which mimics the butterfat component.

I just can’t see spending extra $$$ for a Yonana gadget (especially since i also have a Vitamix)

The only reason I included the link is cuz they have variations on the basic frozen bananas as well as comments from people who’ve tried it.

People rave about the way that the banana ice cream mimics the real thing.

Aster's avatar

I already tried the frozen bananas and indeed, they did make a very good soft serve. But I got sick. I have great doubts as to whether it was the concoction but I was sick all night. It is possible it was my bad tooth that did it. I had a fever all night and other things I won’t mention.
The tooth was painlessly removed by an oral surgeon for $625.

janbb's avatar

I really find that the best substitute for fattening ice cream is just having less fattening ice cream.

Buttonstc's avatar

Obviously there was a severe infection in the tooth. All that toxicity is enough to make anyone totally sick.

It’s such a shame that it’s now linked in your mind with bananas. It obviously wasn’t them because that’s one of the foods recommended to people recovering from either vomiting or diarrhea so it’s obviously not the cause of your intestinal distress. A rotted tooth is putting a lot of poison straight into the bloodstream.

Aster's avatar

@Buttonstc another thing that happened was I had a half hour of severe, unrelenting chills. The most severe case of chills you could possibly have. After half an hour of teeth chattering and my hands shaking like mad it stopped. Then I had a low grade fever all night.
I wondered : could the two cups of frozen cold bananas have given me the chills? I was fine the following day.

janbb's avatar

It really seems unlikely that any of the illness was banana related.
