How do I perform a credit check on a person, with their permission, of course?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46811points) October 14th, 2014

Have someone I might seriously consider renting the house to. She passed all my questions with flying colors. I asked if she’d consent to a credit check and she said, “Sure. It’s only smart to be cautious when working with people you don’t know.”

I’ve been in businesses where we ran credit checks, but they were tied in with a specific companies who did that. As an individual how would I do that?

You go on the local renters rights or landlords rights website and pay 40$. You can ask your prospective tenant to do their own , too. There’s lots of websites for credit checks , however your tenant can get credit reports from all 3 agencies for free.

Alternatively, you can ask the prospective tenant to provide a credit check – then you don’t have to pay for it. I had an owner ask me for this once. She was startled to find that my credit rating was better than hers was.
