What is a slow paced easy job for someone who can not handle stressful work?

Asked by talljasperman (21916points) November 22nd, 2014

Fast food is not an option. I don’t have a drivers license. I have a high school diploma.

You could write a column. I think you have great opinions, interests and humour. Maybe think of an angle and start a blog or submit a column idea to an online paper.

A girlfriend of mine was a taste tester for Godiva chocolates. Can you imagine? She had a fridge full of chocolates. LOL.

Maybe search websites for work at home jobs. Just watch out for scams. You could fill envelopes for political campaigns? Maybe volunteer at first.

Can you ride a bike? What about delivering newspapers?

talljasperman's avatar

@chyna too cold. I don’t like being outside in bad weather.

Janitorial work is probably your best bet. Usually nobody around to hassle you.

Just know that jobs generally have elements of discomfort and things you don’t like. I know I’m not a fan of my long commute :/

Factory work: no dealing with the public, low stress, generally decent pay and benefits. High school is usually all that is required. It can be quite boring though.

talljasperman's avatar

@all writing a column sounds excellent! I will do that as soon as I figure how to do it.

janbb's avatar

@talljasperman Not to throw cold water or anything but it will be hard to make money writing.

talljasperman's avatar

@janbb Excellent. I will stay on disability until I make a name for myself.

Most people with writing degrees have a very difficult time with making money with writing. Doesn’t your profile say that you’re bad with grammar?

Why not be a janitor on a night shift?

talljasperman's avatar

@seekingwolf I am not allowed to work at nights. it also has to be safe environment. I think I will stay on Fluther until my writing improves.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Why are you not allowed to work at night?

talljasperman's avatar

@Dutchess_III Because I messed up my sleep schedule when I worked at s convinence store night shifts. I need permission from my dr. to work.

Stocker. You can work in the day, there’s no customer interaction, and there are many and varied businesses that need stockers and have a high turnover rate, and so are constantly hiring. If you’re a tall person who can lift a decent amount of weight, that helps a lot.

You could go to a temp agency and see what they think? Tell them your skills and they can tell you white might be available.

Another idea is bag groceries at a market. Or, be a greeter at Walmart.

seekingwolf's avatar

I would say either a stocker or a janitor. Did your doctor specifically say that you can’t work nights? Yeah, nights mess up your sleep schedule. That’s true of everyone, disabled or not. I know, I worked straight nights for over a year plus I work the occasional night shift now.

Unless your doctor says that you cannot, for medical reasons, work nights, then employers may expect you to work them. “They make me tired” or “they mess up my sleeping” alone doesn’t constitute as a valid excuse.

gailcalled's avatar

What do you do to pass the time now during the traditional working day?

talljasperman's avatar

@gailcalled I sleep and Fluther.

gailcalled's avatar

Should you perhaps start by working on your stamina?

talljasperman's avatar

@gailcalled What do you suggest?

@talljasperman

I would start by working on puzzles or even fun puzzles games. Get your brain going and thinking.

Parking garage attendant.
Fortune teller.
Any toll roads, bridges, or tunnels where you live? Toll booths look pretty low stress.
Are you afraid of heights? I hear window washers are often in demand.
I know you said away from people, but, it still might be right for you. Could you take a cosmetology course, and learn to give manipedies? Lots of women like to have a man with a gentle touch to do their pedicures. You could practice saying things like, “Oh, that beast!”, and, “You are better off, love.” You might even meet the woman of your dreams that way.
Too bad about the nights. Night security would be great for you. You could just walk around once an hour or so, and call the cops if anything seems wrong. Maybe you could get a job watching security cameras during the day, at a government building, or airport, or something.

What do you love to do? What do you know a lot about?

A warehouse job might be higher-paid than a retail stocking job, because of the heavier lifting. It has the same benefits of not having to deal with the general public. Same with working for a contractor or landscaper.

In the longer-term, a job repairing machinery would probably have a lot of those same qualities. But because of the more advanced skills, it would pay more. You could learn how to fix cars or computers, for instance.

Back to the warehouse job, there seems to be a pipeline where guys start out with a basic job there, and move up to delivery drivers. That would require getting a commercial driver’s license. CDL is in pretty high demand, and the guys seem to make a good living.

talljasperman's avatar

@longgone I love to Fluther and small talk.

longgone's avatar

Small talk…how about a job selling something or counselling people, then?

Dutchess_III's avatar

^^^ I think both of those options have the potential for stress.

longgone's avatar

^ That’s true.
