Have you ever been to a place with a lawless feeling?

Asked by Esteban1 (376points) November 29th, 2014 from iPhone

Do you know what it’s like to be somewhere, and even if you did have a cell phone signal, it would take the police at least a half hour to get to you?

I like it more than I don’t like it. Do you?

Yep, I have lived on rural properties in the Sierra Nevada high foothills for decades. Most of my homes have been a minimum of 20 to a maximum of about 35 minutes from “town”, drivng at roughly 45mph.
My last house of 7 years did not get good cell reception period. If you slowly pivoted around on the deck you might get lucky. haha This 10 acre property is closer to town, gets cell reception, but it is still secluded and probably around a 8–12 minute response time.
Best of both worlds.

I used to. But one day I found myself lying on the floor having a heart attack, and waiting for EMS to show up. It was 35 minutes after I had called 911 that the 911 operator called back to ask for directions. It should have been a 20 minute trip, but it took them over 45.

I had hoped to spend the rest of my days in this house, but I’ve had doubts about living so far from town ever since.

I’ve probably spent most of my life in such places. Whether I enjoy it depends on the character of the place. If it’s total wilderness, I love it. If a small town a million miles from anywhere, I usually don’t enjoy it at all.

I was in the Dominican Republic, and the police station had a guy sitting in the doorway with a fifty caliber machine gun in his hands. I wondered about that.

Police? What police? You mean the sheriff who must cover the whole county, or his deputy? That was the scene where I grew up. I was a teenager before I locked a door, but that was ony if we were going to be out of town over night.

Jamaica. on vacation. A scary place if you leave the Resort (which they don’t recommend).

I had an assignment in Haiti where help was at least 30 minutes out. But we were more than capable of taking care of ourselves.
