Help on global issues essay for college application?

Asked by romanovah (10points) November 30th, 2014

I’m applying to Georgetown with an intended major of Culture Politics and I’m having trouble with my last essay. Here’s the prompt:
Briefly discuss a current global issue, indicating why you consider it important and what you suggest should be done to deal with it.

I’ve chosen to write about women’s oppression globally then boil it down to how it exists in the US. My problem is in what specifically to write about. Women’s oppression comes in various forms such but I can’t seem to pick one general area to focus on. Any ideas?

Very good question.
As someone who likes writing, I find it is easier to find where to begin in what you know. Write down all the specifics you want to cover. Women’s oppression does take on many forms, but here are a few thoughts:
Pain- women’s oppression is anguish in all its forms.
Death- it has a hefty death toll, a lot of it is seen as rightful by preexisting antiquated laws.
Time- The difference between then and now, the evolution of women’s rights.
I’d pair it down to the big ticket items and reference the more finicky subjects. If this isn’t what you were looking for I’d be happy to help you brainstorm further.
Would love an update on what you decide.

How about pay inequity or reproductive rights? There will be a lot of information on either. Being specific in your essay will be important; generalities are fairly useless.

-being denied the opportunity for formal education
-being restricted to a few career opportunities
-being shunned from the highest levels of power, whether in a corporation, government, or religious institution

@janbb‘s suggestions are excellent, and probably where I would start as well. But if you find that the topic is too unwieldy, choose another that you can organize more easily. In this context, it’s more important to write a piece that is directed and coherent than to write a piece on a topic you are passionate about.

Whoo! So I forgot my password and I finally managed to log in. Thanks for all your help. I’ve decide to focus on education and sexual objectification/reproductive rights.

I do have one more question, if anyone reads this: with regards to education, I know that many countries we presume as never letting women move forward such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, or India, have had female heads of state with the “leaders of the free world USA” has not. I want to bring attention to the issues in these counties and many like it, but I don’t want to leave that little tid bit out just.

Any suggestions?
