What's a good present to give to my friend who recently moved from India?

Asked by Carly (4555points) December 2nd, 2014

I have a co-worker/friend who is homesick. He moved from India about 4 months ago for college, but the cold weather here in the midwest is definitely frustrating for him.

I know how he feels. How about some warm throws for his couch. Or, seriously not joking, thermals. Or, give him a book on how to make a winter home cozy. (All of this I had to learn). Another thing he might like is a map of where all the best spice shops are. I felt so down when I moved to the UK, but I am finding it a bit easier now. When it gets dark earlier I put on all my pretty warm lights and cozy up. I had to literally learn how to deal with this weather. I might actually be enjoying it a little (just a little!).

Here’s a stretch, but do you have any Indian restuarants in the area?

Long johns if he doesn’t have a pair already. People not accustomed to the cold don’t know the rules to keeping warm. He might, but he might not. First layer close to the skin, then multiple layers to keep warm or remove as needed. I find a lot of people don’t know the first layer close to the skin rule. People will put on big sweaters, but not have the layer underneath the sweater that makes the huge difference.

If you don’t want to spend the money for a full set you could just get the top. A nice comfy cotton one.

Do you know his food tastes at all?

Go here and find a hearty soup or other dish and make it for him.
Alternately, if you can’t cook, offer someone you know who is a great cook time+materials to make it for you.
I would jump at that chance! Make something new with no risk.

Agree with @JLeslie and @LornaLove: but think about silk longjohns. They feel and look much less goofy than thermals and they’re thin and easy to wear nice clothes over. Also, good strong wool socks. SmartWool is great. Lasts a long time and does the job. Also, remind your friend that a huge per centage of heat loss is out of the scalp, and buy him a nice corny wool hat. Maybe knit one. Heavy and foolish in design—-> cheerful.

A fleece blanket and a box of Indian tea.

Does he cook?

Get some garam masala and ghee and other Indian ingredients. Or if there is an Indian restaurant nearby, bring him a takeout meal.
