Is anyone surprised by the torture report?

Asked by syz (35938points) December 9th, 2014

The report is out, and it seems to pretty clearly indicate that our government knowingly lied to us (again). They lied about the number of detainees against who we used torture ahem, ‘enhanced interrogation’ against and about how effective those techniques were. In combination with the proven lies about MWD, the lives lost….....will anyone ever be held accountable?

Geee you should know by now, that Governments, large corporations, and and the wealthy DO NOT have to be accountable for anything.

And as for your question NOPE.

Nothing new, the higher ups have always been liars. It is what it is, sadly.

I am surprised that they released a report at all.

Well, it was under the GW Bush administration so no. I’m not surprised.

Not surprised at all. The only surprising thing to me is that it was released (even though censored) in the first place.

@ragingloli Only 500 of 6000 pages, right?

No, not surprised.
And not surprised by the wailing and gnashing of teeth about its release either.

This will offend some people, but the truth is that governments do a lot of stuff in our behalf
that they can’t tell us about or we’d prevent them. Spying is a good example. Just getting real here. I’m sure the Obama administration has not entirely reformed the way we get information – at least, not so as to endanger the collecting of said information. And I’m saying this as a huge fan of this administration.

Not surprised. After 9/11 this country was in a uproar. How can this happen. Lets do to them what they do to us. They are no better than animals because they killed a lot of innocent people that day.

I’m not a fan of Bush but the reality is that if we were soft on the enemy, than our nation would’ve protested that we were being too kind in treating vicious animals like people.

The only reason people are suddenly acting shocked is because it is years later and those not directly affected by 9/11 have buried it in the past and because Bin Laden was killed. So now it is ok to scream about how wrong it was. And I believe the only reason this was released was to make the current president look bad. The same way they continue to blame Obama for our countries bad finances that was created by Bush, they will blame this torture on Obama and try to paint him as a war criminal. Just watch.

Not really surprised but I will be shocked by it for the foreseeable future. To really get closure I would have to see Bush and Cheney in the dock but that will never happen.

I just read it. It’s horrible.

We deserve the hate of the world. We live in a supposed democracy and we elect people who allow these things to happen. Disgusting.

9/11 didn’t wake us up. What’s it going to take?

Not surprised at all.

It’s naive to think that only 1 of the inept political parties knew about this. Hey, lets blame Bush! No, it’s the Democrats fault! Newsflash, neither party is under any obligation, whatsoever, to represent you after the election cycle is over. Bush could not have accomplished what he did, under the secrecy he did it, without Democrat collusion.

You just go ahead and believe in whatever brand of bologna that makes you happy. Just keep in mind that reality paints a completely different picture than the bubble of information that you live in.

What surprises me is that the report was issued. How many other countries would be willing to issue a report admitting that they used torture and that it was ineffective? I take this as a sign that although democracy in America may not be as healthy as we would like, it is still there.

syz's avatar

What has surprised me is that I have regained respect for John McCain

@LostInParadise Democracy would be in an even healthier state if those responsible for subverting it were brought to justice. The president behaved like one of the nastier dictators and this is acceptable? It sets a very undemocratic precedent.
