(NSFW) Can a smartphone get a virus from surfing adult sites?

Asked by talljasperman (21916points) January 9th, 2015

I got a warning that my battery was damaged, but I don’t believe it. I only go to one specific site.

The short answer is yes. You can get a virus through surfing, through opening an email, or for clicking a link in a message. It depends on what type of phone and operating system you are using.

There are free smart phone anti-virus apps. They may have loaded an app (virus) on your phone that will use up the battery AND may cause additional charges to your account.

It most likely wasn’t a real warning. It was a ad making itself look like a system warning trying to scare you to into clicking. Shit like this.

Best bet is to install Firefox on Android and then install the ad-block edge extension. That killed ads for me.

You can certainly get viruses. But at least on mobile they vary rarely announce themselves. They would rather sit in the background and steal all your data.

A friend just got this warning, who never goes to porn sites, so I am betting this is a scam lure to get you to click and install something that is itself an infection of one sort or another.
