Ever been back to your school building as an adult after 20-30 or more years? How did you feel?

Asked by ZEPHYRA (21750points) January 10th, 2015

Did everything seem much smaller than it did back when you were a kid. If you have not been back is it due to distance, repulsion for your school or something else?

No, but I wish I could. I do not know if my emotions would tend to the horrific or sentimental.

I felt a little twang of guilt, but quickly realised that using petrol instead of paper would make for a more fierce blaze, burn quicker too.

Nah, not at all in truth @Roland
Just a little joke, it’s good for morale :D

Yes I have. I went back at the age of 28. It was completely surreal. Yes, everything looked smaller to me. One of my teachers from back then was still there. I was shocked at how old he looked, as of course in my memory he was so young.
I used to have problems with anxiety attacks as a kid. Sometimes the would happen in the cafeteria. When I looked into that room, my stomach started to hurt and my whole body just felt wierd. Also I looked at my kindergarten room and it made me want to cry. Yes, I had a difficult childhood.

I went to a great elementary school in a great upper middle class area that is still lovely. I haven’t been back inside the school itself but I should make a visit. I see that the school yard has been changed significantly.

20 years? I haven’t hit 20 yet. I did come back to my old schools at some point but that was just a couple of years ago. Generally nothing had really changed except for the new paint. At one school I couldn’t find my teachers. Most of them had been replaced by newer ones, and that was sad. I felt a bit nostagic during those visit except for my visit to high school. I was glad I had got out.

I would love to find my old teachers, but as I was in elementary school about 40 years ago, it’s very likely they’re very old or not around any longer.

Yes; my son went to the same elementary school I attended – he is 25 years younger than me. When I first went inside it definitely seemed much smaller than I remembered. Over the four years he went there, it began to feel less surreal as I created new memories there.

My elementary school still looks exactly the same almost 40 years later. Nice little suburban neighborhood school, park next to it, fond memories. My HS however has turned into a ghetto school. Sadly the area that used to be middle/upper middle class zone has deteriorated to a not very good area in the last 40 years years.

I drove past but we couldn’t go in. It was all shut up. I believe it’s been demolished now. Bit sad really. I’d like to have gone for a look around.
