Only taken four doses of Lipitor and my legs hurt. Stop?

Asked by majorrich (14741points) January 19th, 2015

My doctor started me on a small dose (10mg) lipitor and 160mg Fenofibrate. I started taking them Saturday morning. This evening I noticed my quadriceps feel like I have done several sets of leg extensions. I normally don’t have a lot of sensation below the waste so this is a little unusual. It’s too late to stop taking the little lipitor for today, but should I stop one or the other tomorrow? The achyness isn’t unbearable, just feels like I been working out, which I haven’t been able to do for 10 years.

Feonfibrate: Drugs.com

You should check with your doctor immediately if any of these side effects occur when taking fenofibrate:

Chills or fever
hives or skin rash
itching
muscle aches and pains
nausea or vomiting.

Lipitor:Drugs.com

Stop taking Lipitor and call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:

unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness;

Less serious side effects:

Mild muscle pain.

I would not take another pill of either med. until you check with your physician. It could be an allergic reaction. As we get older, we are more and more likely to have allergic reactions to medication, typically after 48 hours.

Thanks Gail! I was watching TV and noticed I had my legs curled up on the recliner. I don’t normally do that. Kinda caught me unawares. Normally don’t feel anything at all, so it’s kind of gratifying I can feel something down there.

If you skip the pills for 12 or so hours, no harm done.

Stop it immediately. That’s a nasty sign. Sending this to another person with more knowledge.

I would contact your doctor first thing in the morning and let them know what you are experiencing. I would hold off on taking another dose until you talk to the doctor.

Same thing happened to me when I got prescribed statins. Achey legs within 72 hours. I told my Doc I was going off and worked on lowering my cholesterol through diet and exercise.

Cal your doctor first thing in the morning.

STOP! STOP! STOP!

Weirdest thing! I called the Doctor this morning and the nurse said the aching was ‘normal’ and to continue to take the medicine. I think I will go visit the Chemist today. This morning my calves feel heavy.

Same thing happened to me when I was placed on Lipitor. Dr. placed me on a different statin (Mevacor) and I’ve had no problems since. Some drugs of the same type just react differently to your body than others.

Do consider the nurse is an idiot.

Call customer service for your medication. The manufacturer. They’ll tell you to stop.

Don’t risk it. If you continue to feel muscle pain go to get a blood test.

I know someone left a little crippled from a staton and another person who died.

Don’t listen to the nurse. Insist on talking with the doctor. Nurses are great, but I’m not putting my life in their hands.

Go with @JLeslie and @Adirondackwannabe – your doctor is responsible for your prescription and your health. Plus, he went to medical school.

If the doctor tells you to not worry consider him to be an idiot too. If he wants to keep you on the drug then you have to weigh the risks and benefits, but he also should be testing your blood to make sure nothing very serious is going on.

If you want to confirm for yourself it’s the drug, stop taking it for two weeks, if you feel better the real test will be when you start taking it again and see if the pain starts up again. It sounds like you reacted with the first pill, so you will know right away.

Trying a different drug might help. Making sure you are not taking other drugs that are contraindicated with a statin is important too.

Disclaimer: I’m not a doctor.

Lipitor

Fibrates and Statins combined

Don’t go by just those two links as enough research. I suggest you read up on your condition and treatments to help you decide what you are comfortable with.

I’ve stopped taking the lipitor and am taking the other pill. I’m still kinda achy but am going to give it about a week to see how I am doing. The Fenofibrate seems to just make air so I fart like crazy. But I don’t know if it’s going to make my legs ache less. In the meantime, I am looking at natural solutions for my triglycerides.
Thanks Guys! I figured hurt was bad, but wasn’t sure about just low level ache.
