How many Catholics do you think really avoid using birth control?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46807points) January 20th, 2015

My converted-to-Catholicism (by her fiance) sister used the pill until they were ready to start having kids. After the 3rd one her husband had a vasectomy.

I know my Mom used the pill even when she considered herself a Catholic.

I think smart Catholics just don’t bring it up.
And the ones with 27 kids aint the smart ones.

In this day and age,it’s rather stupid not to use some form of birth control.
And the Lord said go fourth and populate, can’t ever remember reading anything that said go fourth and over populate, to the numbers we have today.

I’m sure it was the Roman Catholic Church that inserted that bit of demand so they could get more followers of the church and Rome in general.

Real Catholics or paper Catholics?

From a 2012 study of women in the US

98% of sexually active Catholic women have used birth control at some time.

68% were “currently using a highly effective contraceptive method”.

2% of Catholics use natural family planning, the only method of contraception sanctioned by the Catholic hierarchy.

The numbers were nearly the same for Catholics and non-Catholics.

I have one Catholic friend who I know while married only used the “rhythm” method. The rest of my Catholic friends used birth control.

I know at least one friend of a friend who just lets whatever happens happen, because they are Catholic, and they have 5 kids.

One roommate of mine was Catholic and I know her mom used withdrawal to avoid pregnancy, but I have no idea if it was for religious reasons.

I’m not Catholic, but I used rhythm during my marriage. I got pregnant almost every time I wanted too, it just didn’t last—miscarriages and ectopics. I never got pregnant when I didn’t want to. When I was married about 7 years I had a surgery and never was able to get pregnant again.

^^ Those type of paper Catholics do not need birth control, but living ones would.

I think there are a lot of Catholics who, when it comes down to it, are in disagreement with the teachings of their Church. Most just live with it but many finally decide to move on either to a different religion that more closely aligns with their real view or just drop it completely. Most that I know or have known use some form of birth control.
