No…I like owning my own company and being in control of my own destiny.

If I could teach just one or two classes I’d like it. Not sure what subject it would be.

That’s what I want after graduation. I’m studying pedagogy and would like to at least find somewhere to teach.

Tenure and 11 months off a year and I could never be fired. Oh, they also make a million dollars a year. Sign me up!

I wouldn’t mind, depending on the field. Academics work hard, but they get a great lifestyle to go along with it.

I used to want to but times are hard in academia and the humanities, which would be my area, area not faring well. There are a number of university professors in my family;@jp, they do not make a $1,000,000 a year.

In the sciences, you are constantly looking for grant money which is why my son didn’t go into academia.

They do make around $100k on average, which is a decent salary. Especially with tenure added in and they used to have good plans for medical and other insurance, I don’t know about now. My dad was making about $8,500 in the early 70’s as a professor. The average salaries for professors have done better than keep up with inflation from what I can tell in the last 40 years. I don’t know if full time professors get 3–8 weeks off in the summer like k-12. I know some are expected to publish and there are probably other obligations I am not aware of.

Years ago I did have a chance to teach at a college but was unable to accept the job. I still regret that I didn’t.

I have a close friend who used to run an ad agency but is a college professor (and artist). I admire him more than I can say.

2015 college year

Salary scale for faculty at SUNY (State University of New York)

$38,804 to $135,007.

JLeslie's avatar

@gailcalled is the low end a full professor? Or, associate? I’m surprised to see it that low. I do think it’s possible though. Probably $100k is about right then for either the mode or median average.

wow, humanity! Love it!!
And so darn right.. academic doesn’t lead to super rich.

wsxwh111's avatar

@JLeslie He said faculty, which is the lowest in teaching positions, I guess.
I heard some upperclassmen from my school made it right after they finished their Ph.Ds.

wsxwh111's avatar

And they said that they made about 80k dollars.

wsxwh111's avatar

@Mimishu1995 wow that’s great dude, good luck on that

@gailcalled This says average is $98k for full professor. I don’t know why you are only looking at SUNY?

gailcalled's avatar

It was a good codified list for 2014 for one state, local, competitive university in the northeastern US…seemed representative

The figure of 98K in your link seems to be for 2006 or 2008. It was confusing to read.

JLeslie's avatar

LOL. What do you think? It’s lower than 2006? I didn’t notice it’s a statistic from several years ago, but I doubt university salaries have gone down significantly.

SUNY doesn’t represent the Northeast that well if you look at total averages in the northeast I would think. Add in all the private schools and the average must shoot up.

I went to a SUNY and one of my professor’s wives was a teacher at one of the local public high schools (one of the most affluent counties in the country). He told us that his wife made more as a high school teacher than he did as a professor.

That was in the early 90’s.
