Who else is getting ready for the storm-of-the-day tomorrow, besides me?

Asked by gailcalled (54644points) February 1st, 2015

I am now getting alarming emails, in red with lots of exclamation marks, from the Nat’l Weather Service warning me about the new 12” of snow starting tonight and continuing through-out Monday. (Central NE NYS.)

So out I go, to stock up yet again. Tomorrow I guess I will return to my three-volume history of punctuation, starring the apostrophe.

Epic-Storm-of-the-Week is my new term for them now. (Unless we start having multiple storms per day because of, y’know, ‘climate change and all’, in which case your term would be more accurate to describe the ‘principal storm of the day’.)

In any case, since I prepped well for the Super Bowl and for next week’s meals, I’m pretty much ready for anything, climate-wise – at least for next week.

janbb's avatar

^^ I’ve still got chili and meatballs and sauce from last week’s snow cooking fest.

Dutchess_III's avatar

We got wind advisories. Guess I better stock up.

ZEPHYRA's avatar

Don’t panic, you will see a freezing cold day with the sun out. No need to do anything, sit back and relax!

Mariah's avatar

We just had two snow days last week and we’re looking at a possible third one tomorrow or Tuesday. This is actually kind of disastrous for my college, since we have 7 week long quarters and each day is usually crammed full of material.

janbb's avatar

@Mariah But surely, being in New England, they must know it is a strong possibility every year?

Mariah's avatar

Oh yeah. It can and does happen. It just usually means that we end up not being able to cover topics we wanted to cover, which is a shame.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

We had 2cm last night, just enough to turn the roads slimy, and our snow was almost gone so every thing is white again.

livelaughlove21's avatar

Not me. It’ll be nearly 60 degrees here tomorrow.

LuckyGuy's avatar

<——Always ready!

janbb's avatar

I’ve invited @LuckyGuy over. I’m ready!

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

The birds are going nuts at the feeders. Never a good sign. Well, I guess my stuff is ready.

I brought my computer home, so I can telecommute if needed. My sweetie is making his commute tonight and camping out at a hotel close to his office. Since he’s the head of IT, he’s the one to deal with pre-storm prep and recovery after a power outage. I also feel better knowing that he’s not commuting the 55 miles each way in the slop with all the idiots who haven’t a clue how to drive in clear weather as it is.

jca's avatar

My daughter’s school is closed. I think they were closed two days last week. Not sure about the week before but I know the last two weeks, I missed one day of work each week. Tomorrow’s not looking too good, either right now.

I’m sure many people will have leftovers from Super Bowl parties. I am not going to a party, but anyone who knows me knows there’s a month supply of coffee, yogurt, cheese and crackers and all kinds of miscellaneous stuff in my kitchen.

I’ve really had it up to here with snow by now.

dappled_leaves's avatar

Sadly, this one will miss us, too! Just a couple of cm expected over the next day or so. Send us a bit of that snow, will you?

canidmajor's avatar

I still have food and prep left over from last week. I will do the shoveling thing, which will hopefully counteract the cooking and eating lavishly thing.
Yeah, I know it doesn’t really work that way, but it makes me feel better to think so.

gailcalled's avatar

@dappled_leaves: I am rounding up and harnessing the huskies and the sledge. Snow will arrive chez toi tomorrow; free shipping.

dappled_leaves's avatar

Thank you! I’m sure I can put the huskies to good use as well.

gailcalled's avatar

Don’t expect them to hang around when they have the three-feet drifts at my house waiting for them.

Adagio's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe Those avians know a thing or two.

dappled_leaves's avatar

@gailcalled But I have bacon. They might prefer to linger.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Adagio When they get goofy, I get careful. :)

jca's avatar

So far, as of 1:20 a.m., just a dusting.

LuckyGuy's avatar

6:45 AM, 2/2. We are getting pounded. They are expecting 12–18” with higher accumulations near the lake. High winds. Gusts to 40 mph. I’d say we have about 6” already on top of the 6” on the ground. Drifts around the cars are 3 ft and the party is just getting started
Obviously, schools are closed.
This storm is going to knock down trees and disrupt power. .

jca's avatar

As of sun-up here, it’s coming down hard, about 5 inches so far. They say south of here where I work, it’s transitioning to rain already. I’m going to wait a few hours and see how it looks. If it looks ok around 11 I’ll take a shower and go to work. It’s going to be icy so I’ll have to really check it out before I make that attempt.

canidmajor's avatar

It’s just unpleasantly messy out there, snow and sleet building up. Even the pups don’t like this. Pooh. No shadow spotting for our local groundhog!

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

Holy shit. We’ve got over a foot and it’s still coming like crazy. 5 inches? pfft.

janbb's avatar

We just have rain at this point.

jca's avatar

They say it’s very icy out and it’s supposed to ice up more later on today. I’m in for the day. It will be a good day to organize some stuff, do some crafts, and maybe watch a movie on Netflix.

canidmajor's avatar

Ice bits coming down now, soon cold rain. I found a teenage boy who will shift all the crap.

I love him! ;-)

jca's avatar

@canidmajor: What section of the country do you live in?

dappled_leaves's avatar

Oooh! Looks like we will get a good 10 cm or so after all. That should make things prettier for a while. :)

canidmajor's avatar

@jca : not too far from you. We’re in the same weather band most of the time. I think you’re just a tad too far away for loaning you my teenage boy. ;-)

gailcalled's avatar

@dappled_leaves: That doesn’t mean you can return my snow or ask for a bacon refund.

dappled_leaves's avatar

@gailcalled I am still keeping an ear out for the yips and howls of your dog team, but they haven’t arrived yet. I hope they didn’t take a wrong turn at Albuquerque.

CWOTUS's avatar

They were planning a delayed opening for work, and have now announced (actually, about 2 hours ago) that it’s a Snow Day!

S’no day to be outside, for sure.

LuckyGuy's avatar

The Town snowplow just made its 4th pass down the road since about 5 am this morning. They are huge trucks that barrel down the road at 50 mph shaking the ground like freight train. The faster they move, the farther they throw the snow. They take up more than half of the road so when we see one coming we try to find a driveway or place to pull off the road. That is a little scary.
We do love our plow guys.
I can see deer walking out back and the snow is rubbing their bellies.

gailcalled's avatar

@dappled_leaves: If that happens, “Better Call Saul.”

Mariah's avatar

We got that third snow day! This is pretty unheard of for my school.

janbb's avatar

Light rain when I went out for lunch has turned from sleet to heavy snow just as I came in. Glad I decided to skip the stop at the supermarket. In for the duration now.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I wish like heck something would happen here! Just cold is all.

jca's avatar

Started snowing again here mid-morning and has been heavy for the better part of the day. Glad I stayed home.

LuckyGuy's avatar

I spent 3 hours using my snow blower. Unfortunately one hour was spent fixing it! I ran over my neighbor’s welcome mat and it got sucked into the augers all the way into the second stage impeller. It was one of those mats made from car tire strips and wired together with strong baling wire so it will last forever. What a mess. I had to take out all six shear pins so I could rotate the augers. Of course there was a full tank of gas so every time I tilted it fuel poured out all over. And it was too heavy to bring back to my house where I have my tools so I had to walk back and forth to get what I needed.
Anyway, I fixed it and managed to take care of everyone but I am done for the day.

janbb's avatar

Didn’t go in to work today – they had a delayed opening – because the roads are ice covered and my wiper blade had popped out yesterday. Niether I nor a neighbor could get it back in so I think I have to go out to the mechanics.

chyna's avatar

^ If @luckyguy was there he could fix it with the spring from a ball point pen and a shoe lace.

gailcalled's avatar

Snowing again here. -6˚ tonight. The day has barely begun and I am so done.

jca's avatar

We got a dusting here (Thursday morning). More coming Sunday into Monday. Snow is on my last nerve at this point.

LuckyGuy's avatar

8 inches last night, on top of the 18 we got on Tuesday. Wind chill advisory. It took me an hour to clear 3 driveways. No wonder “Upstate” New Yorkers snowbird to Florida.

JLeslie's avatar

Snowbird is the way to go. Come on down! We could all do a last minute cheapy cruise to Cozumel for 4 days. This time of year you can often get $350 per person. Or, just hang out by the pool here on land.

LuckyGuy's avatar

A tempting offer…. a very tempting offer… :-)

JLeslie's avatar

We really should do a Fluther cruise maybe. People can do their own thing or hang out with the group. It would be fun and bazaar all at once.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Yes. We all hanging out by a public pool yelling about ugly penes and stuff. There. I’ve finally used “penis” as a plural. Crosses off bucket list.

Mariah's avatar

LOL mother nature is like “fuck Massachusetts and fuck Mondays”

We have only had class on Monday once so far this term (and evening classes were cancelled on that one Monday, too), and it’s looking like we’re going to get another foot of snow on this coming Monday sooooo….

Just got an email that professors are going to be allowed to hold class on Saturdays if they want to because of all this. Here’s hoping my profs are humans too and also do not want to work on Saturdays.

I have friends who literally haven’t gone to class yet this term because their only classes are on Monday evenings.

dappled_leaves's avatar

@Mariah But how can people get credit for courses that they haven’t fully taken? Do you really want to miss the class time? Are they at least assigning extra work at home? I find this interesting, from both student and teacher perspectives.

jca's avatar

Agreed with @dappled_leaves. If there’s a certain amount that must be taught, what happens when it’s not?

Mariah's avatar

I’m more in favor of the digital delivery of material and extra homework to make up for the missed lectures versus meeting on Saturdays, personally. But I’m also a senior with intense senioritis. Of course I want to learn the material I’m paying for…..but I’m also lazy.
