Beard Hair Care: Is facial hair different from head hair?

Asked by majorrich (14741points) February 10th, 2015

Here I am, 54 years old and growing my first beard. I’ve had a mustache for years, but never thought about care of the whiskers. I just kind of let them go and trimmed them. I now muse over whether I should use shampoo and conditioner on my beard like on my head? I’m at the three month mark and I only have about an inch of growth. Not surprising as facial hair is not a notorious feature on Asian men. Does conditioner encourage growth or strength of the hair? I am growing it out for a community theatre production of Fiddler on the Roof where I will be trying for the role of Laser Wolf. So I guess my mangy beard would be ok.

Facial hair is usually coarser than hair on the head. It is similar to pubic and underarm hair in texture. I’ve had facial hair for the majority of my adult life, and it is second nature for me to brush my face at the same time I brush my long hair. Conditioner does not (to my experience) encourage growth, however it might make for less breakage.

BTW, congratulations on the role of Lazar Wolf. I think “Fiddler” is a great show.

My husband doesn’t treat his facial hair like the hair on his head. He washes it with the same soap he washes his face with and certainly never brushes it, regardless of length.

A person’s body hair (including facial hair) is a type of hair called androgenic hair. It is thicker and coarser than the hair on the top of your head.

As I age, I notice the hair on my head getting thinner and the hair on my face (and arms and back and other places) getting thicker!
