Can I Scotchguard a microfiber couch?

Asked by syz (35938points) February 10th, 2015

I have a cat with idiopathic cystitis and he’s peed on my couch. Multiple times.

I was considering a leather couch so I can just wipe it down, but it will definitely get scratched and marred.

Can I Scotchguard or otherwise waterproof microfiber without it looking bad?

Are you going to have the furniture reupholstered or buy new furniture? Either way you can probably have the fabric Scotchgarded before you ever bring it home and I think this is a more effective way to have the treatment applied.

I did a search and found sites that talked about Scotchgarding (or equivalent) microfiber fabrics, and found this response to a similar question. It looks like 3M hedged rather than giving a specific response. Perhaps you could decide on the fabric and call the fabric manufacturer to be sure.

I would test on an area where it is hidden. I find scotchguard can make it look rough but a little brushing it once it dries can make it ok again. Scotchguard isn’t 100 percent effective. It will wear away from people sitting on it and the chemicals in it isn’t exactly safe for pets or people. What you can do is get it professionally cleaned and they can treat it for you. I would then purchase this sofa cover and cover it. I have one at home that I use for spills and dog hair and muddy paw prints. It works great and is easy to wipe clean without leaving any marks on it. You can pop it off when you have guests.
