If someone's intentions are obviously good, how likely are you to find fault with the structure or details of their interaction in a Q&A forum?

Asked by ibstubro (18804points) March 3rd, 2015

You “understand” the question, as asked.

There are no issues you think worth flagging.

You can:
Answer the question.
Pass on the question.
Derail the question by picking nits at questions or the answers.

Be honest. What camp are you in?

I think I pass on more than I answer. I probably answer about 1 out of every 5 questions asked, if I were to hazard a guess.

I pass on a lot of them – mostly the social ones, I think – because sometimes it feels like people aren’t actually interested in discussing something… which is the entire appeal for me to begin with.

I also pass a lot of the time because I end up getting onto Fluther late, and I’m worried that the quality of my answers is going to drop dramatically, so I don’t bother. Just recently I had to edit three of my questions for that reason. :-/

If I disagree with an answer or question, or I feel there’s a different explanation or a different perspective on a topic, I’ll present that different take and I might direct it at the poster I’m disagreeing with. They might call it ‘nit-picking’, I’d call it debate and discussion.

By structure do you mean grammar and spelling?

It depends on my mood.

Ahh, but it’s not a Q&A forum, no, no, the “community” aspect has blown that clean out of the water & for some, dominates their every thought & deed.
The place is rife with this shallow, petty approach, perfectly decent questions are ignored if these people don’t like the asker, these same people then tell us they’re saddened the volume of questions/jellies are in permanent decline & the site suffers as a result…irony much.

One thing that i’ve noticed & that particularly stands out in the 5+ yrs i’ve been here is whenever an argument begins in a thread, that question then draws in particular jellies like flies round shit, “Observing members” appear in great numbers, probably encouraged via PM to indulge in the ensuing car wreck & snipefest.
I have always treated Fluther as purely a Q&A site, lots of fun, make a few pals & chat some shit, the community vibe is fine, as it was originally intended, but has morphed into a hideous, clique filled, negativity fuelled club for the bewildered, not for all obviously, but some have chosen that path.
I shall now be attacked by these cretins for being honest, the funny thing being, they think I care :D
Also, I can pretty much predict who they’ll be, oh & as always, i’m in a good mood, don’t fret.

Yes, I include grammar and spelling, @JLeslie. Have you ever noticed the spelling options when Fluther is auto-filling topics when you ask a question?

Also included are the people who demand a source, as well as the people who find fault with any source provided.

People who start by saying they don’t understand the question, then go on to provide a long answer rather than asking for clarification.

Usually, pass. There are any number of topics and a somewhat smaller number of individual users whose questions I skip.

The question should read “how likely are you MENTION that you find fault with…......?”

If someone’s intention was good, but their premise was flawed, or just plain wrong, I would probably point it out to them, in the kindest way I could. If I was concerned that the OP might go off the deep end, if I pointed out some misinformation, I might just avoid answering the Q.

I find it difficult, if not impossible to answer a Q honestly, if the OP’s premise is flawed or wrong. I try to give examples of how/why it is flawed or wrong.

Some people are glad to receive clear and accurate information to clarify their Q’s. Some people are offended.

I don’t come to Fluther to nit-pick people I disagree with or find fault with. Some people live for that shit. I hate it. There always seems to be one or two people who always disagree with me and take every chance to let me know and tell me how wrong I am. What’s the point? I don’t come to Fluther to bitch or debate. I come here to unwind from a stressful day and give my opinion to a question or solve problems that I have.

So I guess my answer to your question is A.

I try to answer the question.

Sometimes I ask questions for more information to either make sure I understand the question, or to provide a better answer.

Sometimes I take a question off track because my mind works that way. I go off on tangents, because I’m interested in other things related to the Q and I think it will hopefully be interesting or helpful to people. I’d say I do that a little too much. I try to reel it in at times.

I do ask questions directly to other jellies who are answering too if their answer has information I find interesting, or also if it doesn’t make sense to me. I think some people find that annoying. If they tell me they don’t like it I cool it. Most jellies enjoy the banter, it is a Q&A site after all.

I don’t like constant spelling corrections, but I don’t mind at times. When I spell something wrong that is obviously a typo let it slide. Let everyone slide a little. If it’s understood it’s not a big deal. Most of us type on self correcting touch screens that botch up words.

I especially don’t like when someone who is ESL is not given some slack. Most jellies do try to be helpful.

I don’t like the flow of the answers to be riddled with corrections. Especially corrections off topic. We have fun here, learn here, some of us have known each other a very long time.
