Pictured here – this is in an unfinished closet. The house was built in the 1920s.

I’m pretty sure asbestos was used later than the 1920. I think it started in the 30’s and continued for about 15 or 29 years. Even if it was not originally built with asbestos; if the owners remodeled, asbestos might have been added. I have no idea what asbestos looks like, I’m just sharing what I know. You probably need an expert to look at it. Be careful, don’t get ripped off.

If it looks like “cat fur” is mixed in the cement it may have asbestos mixed in for insulation purposes. Do not scratch or strike the surface,

What is cat fur code for?

Asbestos looks like a fur, the fiber is stiff but will break.

I posted a photo. Could you judge?

Asbestos is dangerous when it becomes airborne and then inhaled.

Contact your local building inspectors to get a viable opinion.

I am familiar with asbestos and helped a neighbor pull some out of his house that was wrapped around flue pipes. In his case, it was white, compressed, fur about 1/16 ” thick. If you lightly scrape a screwdriver over it you will see tiny fibers flying free. Your wall does not look like it at all but I really can’t tell with 100% certainly.
If you are not taking the wall down, a simple fix is to paint over it so the material does not spread around.

with the obvious limitations everyone mentions, it’s tough to tell from one photo, buuuut

That doesn’t look like any asbestos I’ve ever seen, I’ve never seen anything that smooth before. The external tiles on a lot of home in my area are asbestos, and even those are obviously made of fibers, yours looks more like a brick/mud/ceramic from here.

There’s writing in the lower right, ”...TION NATCO PART…” is there a part number? That text may be your easiest clue. Wearing a simple mask and tapping it may be a next step. Asbestos is brittle.
