Can a quadruped (such as a dog) jog in place or will they always move forward?

Springer spaniels don’t exactly jog but they certainly spring in place, using lots of energy and going absolutely nowhere but up and down.

I imagine any animal could be trained to do it. It is part of dressage, for example.

It would probably never occur to them to do it on their own, because it’s a waste of energy

@dappled_leaves: How does that theory explain the springers? They spring with joy when their owners appear (after a 10” disappearance) or when any stranger comes along the ride.

@gailcalled Well, they’re pretty well-fed… I don’t think they need to worry about conservation of energy. :)
