Can I get some ideas to help start a vocal music program in this school?

Asked by Strauss (23618points) April 2nd, 2015

As many of you know, I have been teaching a music class at a local expeditionary learning school. It has been what’s termed an “Extended Learning Opportunity”, for 9th graders, for 4 rotations of approximately 7 weeks. This class is more for experience than formal instruction, and the format is a rock band. I’m co-teaching with full-time teacher who from the school who is currently working on his music teaching certification.

It recently occurred to me that there is a need in this small school (student pop ~300) for an extra-curricular full-time vocal music program for all grades. The principal is very approachable, and I know I could just walk into his office, and he would gladly sit and discuss this with me. That being said, I would like to have some kind of proposal in hand, to show I’ve been giving it some thought, with a target of starting next August or September, when the next schoolyear begins.

I have no degree, but many years performance experience, ranging from classical to folk, country, blues, rock, and a strong background in theory.

This is just the first thing that came to mind. I’m just throwing it out there for thought.

At the school where I’ve taken guitar classes, they have some ensemble courses that look fun. They pick a theme or artist, and work on songs from that repertoire. They include guitars and singers (and singing guitarists).

The classes last 8 weeks, and the last night all the groups perform for each other. It’s like grade-school recital night for adults!

Here are a few of the current examples:
Beatles Ensemble
Springsteen Ensemble
80s Alternative Ensemble
Johnny Cash Ensemble

Just my idea for starters.
