How can I convert a music file (in the form of a MIDI) into sheet music for a music box?

Asked by DrewJ (436points) April 27th, 2015

Okay, simply converting music to sheet music is an easy Google search, that’s not what I’m asking…

I am trying to build a music box. I bought this: http://www.uncommongoods.com/images/product/20232_zoom1.jpg

Works very well with the sample song they provide, but for my own song I need to punch holes in the little sheet. Which is not a problem if I knew what I was punching.

I have a song in the form of a Midi. Not sure how to post the midi file here but the song is Drume Negrita (kind of popular) and when I pull it into garage band I get something that looks like this: https://www.evernote.com/shard/s286/sh/6adeb06a-96e1-4ab2-956a-1b7be9ff3d87/efcb427b838b517fbeab1a92c3768a04/deep/0/My%20Song%202.band.jpg

Which feels like I’m on the right track. But I need to somehow convert this into something I could punch holes into on this piece of paper. The music boc only plays in C I believe which is fine.

I found a site that will convert this midi to sheet music and I get this: https://www.evernote.com/shard/s286/sh/2870e460-2f23-4e00-bcf0-6295dab2ae68/bf012c440ef67e7c06317b3d06ff20f1/deep/0/mm1430177204539.385380406423-midi-page1.png.jpg

Not sure on the accuracy but I don’t even know how I’d begin translating that into holes on a sheet like this: http://www.markcolgrove.com/misc/The_Office_Music_Box_Strip.jpg

Anyone have any ideas?

Aside from hitting the “score” tab on the midi track in garage band. There is software available you could download to convert midi to sheet music. As well as some free online convertion sites like 8note.

From what I can see on the image of the device, it seems to have an available range from “Middle C” (technically designation C4) up two octaves to C6, with the heavier lines on the paper representing the lines on the treble clef. E-G-B-D-E. The midi transcript you linked starts with a D2, two octaves below what appears to be the lowest “D” on the device. The first thing I would do would be to transpose the melody up a couple octaves so it can fit within the range of the box. It looks like the music box can “read” several punches at a time, so the polyphonic aspect (playing two or more notes at once) shouldn’t be a problem. You would have to “compress” my own term for the process the arrangement so that all the notes to be played will fall between Middle “C” and the “C” above the treble clef. It might not be the most sophisticated arrangement of the piece, but after all, it is a music box.

Seems to me it’s a 2 stage process: convert the midi to sheet music (which you can do already you said) then convert the sheet music to music box strip – I found this app

@Stinley‘s app would be perfect for the second step. There is even a forum, even though there are no registered users as of yet. I’m not sure if this app will transpose the midi compositions to the proper range for the box, but that part should be relatively easy. If you need any help with the transposition, feel free to PM me.

@Stinley I actually saw that app but it was removed from the itunes store. Now that you link to it again I see that it is available on Google Play for $5.99, when I get home I’m going to try that out for sure! Thanks for the second look!

@Yetanotheruser I sincerly appreciate the offer, I think I might just take you up on that, let me give the app a go and see what I come up with and I’ll PM you if I need. Thanks so much for that!

Oh and @Silence04 I didn’t even know about that score tab, that helps a lot also in that get a score easily and quickly and tha I feel confident is accurate. It doesn’t quite get me closer to “Midle C” Box strip I ened but very helpful nonetheless.
