Help me figure out this lotion/sunscreen issue?

Asked by tinyfaery (44084points) May 17th, 2015 from iPhone

My dermatologist says I must start wearing sunscreen all the time. Until now I’ve only used moisturizer with sunscreen on my face unless I know I’m going to be out in the sun a lot and then I slather on the sunscreen and wear clothes that cover most of my body. And I always wear a hat.

I’m have freckles and moles and my grandmother had to have multiple melanomas removed and that is why my dermatologist is concerned.

Now, I live in a dry climate and I have problems with dry skin. I apply lotion many times a day. Sunscreen is hardly moisturizing. If I have to wear sunscreen everyday, even when I’m in my car, office and house most of the day, do I apply lotion then sunscreen or the other way around? If I reapply lotion do I need to reapply sunscreen? Even at the end of the day when I’ll be getting in my car and going home?

Also, my office has skylights.

I have a facial moisturizer that has 30spf. Find one of those and use it.

I use Olay moisturizer spf 15 (from Costco about 15 for 2 8 oz bottles). I just purchased another non-comidogenuc subscreen (Neutrogena spf 70 also from Costco). I put the moisturizer on first and then a little of the Neutrogena on top.

I have my desk right near my huge window at work, which makes the day interesting but is probably not great for my skin.

I was 30 when I got hired by my current employer with full health benefits. I went to the dermatologist and asked him how I can reduce the signs of aging. He said wear sunscreen every day. People often think I’m ten years younger than I am.

Here’s an article on this very topic with some recommendations.

Also a reminder to put it on your throat and neck.

Keep it with you and reapply and reapply.

Caveat: I will not use products tested on animals.

Are you able to get Nivea sunscreen spray ? I voluntarily use mine as moisturizer, even when there is no sun. I have dry skin too, and it works well.

If that won’t work, I would try to find another kind of moisturizing sunscreen. Maybe your dermatologist can help?

My caveat leaves me with less alternatives.

I’m following this thread. I had 2 basil cell carcinoma’s removed from my scalp. I haven’t seen lotion that you can put on your scalp that would not leave it greasy.
Also, I don’t like to wear hats. They make me sweat.

I might be missing something. It’s true sunscreens the made for posing and playing in the sun poolside are not moisturizing, but moisturizers with SPF are moisturizing, why not use one of those? The problem wth those moisturizers is that as far as sun protection goes, they don’t protect for as many hours as the real deal bathe in the sun sunscreens. The moisturizers plus sunscreen don’t have any water resistance, and so they sweat off easily, but you said you reapply anyway.

Also, I’ll mention thos for the thread, even though I assume the OP probably already knows this; SPF reates to blocking UVB rays. The UVB causes you to tan, burn, wrinkle, and create vitamin D. I think now suntan lotions have to protect against UVA rays also, but there is no information on the bottle about how much protection there is. Moreover, there was a lot of talk about UVC being a really big concern for cancer, and very few products claim to protect against UVC. I really don’t have a ton of knowledge about it, but I would recommend looking into it if you are very concerned about sun exposure that causes cancers.

@chyna I always say my first skin cancer will be on the top of my head. I burn all the time.

The spf moisturizer I put on my face is too pricey to use all over my body every day.

@tinyfaery: When you choose one, can you please post the one you pick and how you use it? I’m always curious what other people do and in your case, with the no testing on animals, I’d like to know what one you pick. I just googled “health and beauty aids that don’t test on animals” and I found some interesting sites with lists.

Oh, that’s what I missed. All over your body. I’ve been saying for years companies that make body lotion should have an SPF option. I don’t get why that hasn’t happened yet.

jca's avatar

@JLeslie: I’ve seen hand lotions with SPF. I guess those could be used all over the body.

This link to elle.com has a number of body sunscreens. http://www.elle.com/beauty/makeup-skin-care/tips/g8380/best-sunscreen/

Most of them look expensive to me but I’m a guy who’s not much into that so what would I know?

I used to use Avon’s sunscreen and moisturizer on my body. It worked quite well as a moisturizer. You’d have to check whether it was tested on animals.

cazzie's avatar

Cosmetic testing on animals is illegal in Europe. Not even a caveat for most products these days. You have more choice than you think.

jca's avatar

I was surprised to find all the companies that do test on animals. Johnson and Johnson (Olay) and Neutragena are included in the lists of companies that do test on animals.

cazzie's avatar

Those are crap brands anyway.

@tinyfaery: What about for the face?

tinyfaery's avatar

I already have a facial moisturizer, 30spf, from The Body Shop that I like a lot.

FYI Love this stuff. No lingering smell, no feeling of being coated and it feels light and fresh.
