Do police do anything with reporters/witnesses of an animal strike?

Asked by nettodo (473points) June 6th, 2015

Disclaimer: I know that this is not an outlet for legal advice; I just wanted some feedback.

So, I was driving home (as a pedestrian) from the train station earlier today and was waiting for geese to clear the road (they’re everywhere here, just off of a highway entrance). After my lane cleared, in the other lane, I saw a car run straight through another goose, striking it. While on my way home, I called Animal Control and they asked for the location, if I wanted my name and number logged/if I wanted to talk to an officer (I said no to both), and that was that. I kinda mentioned that I saw it as a passenger in another vehicle but did not explicitly state so. So, my question is: Will they try to contact me or the driver of my car (I was not driving) because we were there to witness it, or will they leave it alone on my end?

They won’t care in the slightest. This isn’t CSI material. Best to let it go.

It depends on your location, and whether the geese are actively protected there. Some places have people who take more interest than persons elsewhere regarding the protection of wildlife. So far as being a passenger, whenever police do need witnesses to crimes, it doesn’t matter if they are driver, passenger, pedestrian, or flying overhead strapped to a hang glider. When they need to rely on others’ viewpoint to track an action or activity, they will use whoever was a witness.
It must have been a difficult thing to see; it is a shame you had to.

So, will they try to call me back on the phone I used or look at my driver’s plate (if there were cameras there) or what?

Were you driving or not? You cannot be a pedestrian AND driving. Were you walking and saw it, and then called while driving home?

They asked if you wanted to be logged and you said no, so I would be surprised if they went through the hassle of figuring out who you are.

^ I was a passenger in a car in the other lane.

They are not going to work at tracking down someone who said they did not want to be contacted. However, if you are having second thoughts, you are free to call them and inquire whether they need you for anything.

Why wouldn’t you have wanted to speak to an officer?
I think deliberate animal cruelty should be taken seriously but without actually speaking to an official it is is impossible to say whether or not they consider this act to be a violation.
God thing I didn’t witness that I would have chased that driver down and there would have been a serious confrontation. I have pet geese I love dearly and wanton acts of cruelty are unacceptable.

If nothing else I would have shamed that person to death, maybe even risked being arrested myself for assault. The dirty deeds of others have no boundaries.
