Anyone else heard enough about racism, gayness and Obama?

Asked by ARE_you_kidding_me (20021points) June 27th, 2015

Enough already? I need something a little more interesting in my life but these things just will not stop entering conversation wherever I go. For a while this place was a mental refuge from crappy small talk but not lately.
Anyone want to offer up something different to talk about?

Really? Racism and gay rights are at the core of day to day life for a large segment of our population, and what’s been happening is important. Nothing small about it.

I suppose you could go hang out with some first graders, chat about the best cookie brands. Our an old folks home, compare pains and medications.

I agree wholeheartedly with @syz

That’s just it though it should not be a big thing. First graders actually get it. They understand naturally that gay people have rights and that there is nothing wrong with it or that racism is wrong. To them Obama is just some guy on TV and not a savior or the anti-christ. Honestly, I almost prefer talking to toddlers. Enjoy the tumbleweeds folks.

I can’t even.

As done as you might be with talking about racism and gay rights, I bet it’s nowhere close to how done some people are with being the targets of prejudice that threatens their very lives. So sorry to hear that justice bores you.

It does not have to be the topic of every damn conversation, here and almost anywhere I go. I get it already. Can we talk about the Pluto flyby or something. There is more to life than the plight or crazy beliefs of others.

Small talk, to me, consists of topics such as sports, the neighbours, TV and the weather. The recent steps toward equality are anything but “small”, and first graders would understand that easily.

What would you like to talk about? The demise of a tiny Q and A site?

Inara27's avatar

There seems to be a number of questions posted recently that do not involve these subjects. If there are already too many, why did you post this question?

Previous posts are right, this should not be a big deal, but it is. It will be until the US really understands and implements equal rights.

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

@longgone yes, that’s the actual point. Kudos for being the first. I honestly miss the old days here where we had lively debates and interesting conversations about a variety of things. Trolls included. It was a refuge for me from day to day conversation that offered little more than was was on the news or what the weather was like. Unless we revive some of this then there is nothing to keep people posting or new members from joining. As big as these conversations are they are everywhere and have become a part of “chit chat“so there is nothing to keep this place special if it is all we talk about.

Huh. And here I was, thinking there were finally some good discussions happening on Fluther again. I guess you can’t please all of the people all of the time.

Darth_Algar's avatar

Yet here you are, stirring up these topics even more by whining about them. If you don’t want to talk about them then don’t talk about them. You’re perfectly free to introduce whatever topic for conversation you’d like.

SavoirFaire's avatar

@ARE_you_kidding_me People ask questions about what they want to discuss. So the presence of a lot of questions on these topics means that a lot of people here want to discuss them. If you do not, you are free to ask a question on a different subject. But I don’t see why you are so insistent that the rest of us not talk about what interests us just because it doesn’t interest you.

There’s also a definite irony in asking a question that invites discussion of topics that you say you are sick of discussing.

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

..and then there is this holier than thou crap to deal with too. Forgive me for even suggesting it.~

Darth_Algar's avatar

It’s not “holier than thou”, it’s pointing out that be doing this you’re contributing to that which you’re complaining about.

stanleybmanly's avatar

Well we’re certainly discussing something now. Since you’ve decided to stick your head above the trench wall and draw fire, I find it curious that you would do so over serious and definitive topics. It isn’t the “why doesn’t he call me/why do I dream of her questions that get your goat?

Berserker's avatar

I’m not entirely sure small children “understand” much about these issues? Their innocence and lack of comprehension on such matters may make them much more open minded than most of us yes, but it can also make them extremely cruel, as well. Man, don’t you remember being in elementary school?

Berserker's avatar

Also is that dude gonna set himself on fire now?

Obama, racism & gayness…oh my!
Obama, racism & gayn…repeat to fade

josie's avatar

No. I want more. Much more

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Oh No, and I want to hear more about how how the private sector will save us all, can we hear more about that as well?

Pachy's avatar

Mmm, you must not be an member LGBT person or have been worrying about losing your health insurance subsidies. Bet none of THOSE folks are tired of hearing of it.

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

I’m also tired of hearing about religion, facebook and sports if that makes you feel better.

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

..and tired of hearing about kaitlin Jenner too.

Coloma's avatar

Yes, and If I see one more Bruce Gender article I am going to go postal.
Fire away, I don’t care, the guys a Froot Loop. Why cant he/she just go off and do his/her own thing without feeling the need to splash him/her-self all over the place? Pffft!

jca's avatar

Bruce Jenner and the Kardashians I could do without ever hearing about again.

stanleybmanly's avatar

In fairness you can’t blame Jenner for all the noise and hype. The Maury Povication of what passes for “news” nowadays meant no escape. And why begrudge the uh, er, mmmm woman a lucrative if tawdry living in a nation bereft of jobs. She serves her purpose. Dazzle the people frequently with shiny things, and they dwell a little less on why they can no longer feed their families.
